    Pros

Reputation in the marketplace for quality products and services. Well-known for its P&C business and leading provider of group benefits.

    Cons

Not great at recognizing and retaining top talent. Lagging in technology capabilities and embracing innovation. May have trouble recruiting younger generation to work here.

    Advice to Management

It costs 150% more to replace talent. Where you used to have longevity you now have a revolving door...

I worked at The Hartford (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A solid, well-run company that went through some hard times, but seems to be headed in the right direction (if their stock price is any indication). Was very proud of how diverse and inclusive the company is.

    Cons

Despite significant Work/Life Balance discussion and efforts on the part of senior management to address it, there remains a culture of "work till you drop" (at least that was my experience).

I have been working at The Hartford (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is a pretty decent culture between adjusters, there are good health benefits, they match 401k, salaries are competitive for insurance.

    Cons

The management is absolute mess. The turn over rate is high because they overload new people and there is no consistency in management. Pretty hit or miss with who you get. My first manager made me want to quit-- she was belittling and when I spoke to management they told me it was *me* that was the problem.

There is opportunity to move up but no training for it. So you basically drown.

    Advice to Management

Work on claim overload. Hire more adjusters and work on retention.

I have been working at The Hartford full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart employees, great benefits, good life balance and flexible work arrangements. Handled the 2008 crisis well. Transformed workforce quickly. Nice facility.

    Cons

Hierarchical, poor management practices, and breeds mediocrity. Finance is accounting only. Too many leaders and consultants. Too few doers. Very political.

    Advice to Management

Cut through consulting and corporate speak to reach profit priorities. Limit priorities.

I worked at The Hartford full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fair pay (starting at 14.50 and $15.75 just 1.5 yrs later) Benefits package is good and includes bonuses, discounts and gift cards. Fantastically supportive supervisors. Upward mobility. Professionalism.

    Cons

Back to back to back calls. Ridiculous expected metrics. Low pay for industry, everyone lost their performance bonus even though OUR team was one of the highest performing. (-$5000 annually, ridiculous!) Explained to our customers why their rates were shooting up astronomically while we were taking a gigantic pay cut. Corporate greed, much? Expensive health insurance. Weekends and late night weekdays.

    Advice to Management

You will lose a lot of experienced and motivated people because of the pay cut and the rate increases with irate customers. A few simple ways to solve: Pay more (this is good for morale, duh!) Don't hammer tenured reps with retention calls. Admit that the metrics are ridiculous. Hire enough people so that saying goodbye to one customer is not half a second away from answering the phone with the next customer.

I have been working at The Hartford full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Remote work, flexible work arrangements, great work/life balance

    Cons

All benefits depend on your manager. If you get one who is not flexible, those benefits like flexibility won't be available. Sometimes the work level/claim load is extreme. Good adjusters typically piled on.

    Advice to Management

Flexibility and work/life balance are key to retaining employess. Some managers should be consistent with this philosophy .
