I worked at The Hartford full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

the parking (albeit very far away) is free

    Cons

too many senior managers, too many people who have been at the company for 20+ years with huge compensation packages that do not do any actual work and are vicious in protecting their fluff jobs; lack of senior leadership; no vision or direction for the company, just constant efforts to reduce expenses to be almost competitive with other P&C carriers

    Advice to Management

act more decisively. if you announce mass layoffs, do not spend two years conducting them. have a vision for the future and try to engage your employees instead of threatening them with RIFs. remove the tedious layers of useless middle management.

I have been working at The Hartford full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good starting salary, PTO (although health benefits are quickly eroding)
    Work from home
    Company car

    Cons

Ignore the bogus 5-star reviews. This company is toxic.

New "bonus" program actively pits you against your co-workers. Morale is worse today than anywhere I have ever worked (opposite of 10 years ago at Hartford). Management at all levels above field manager are uninspiring and only concerned with job security. Low morale somehow becomes our fault for not drinking the Kool aid. Metrics have nothing to do with helping insureds or our underwriters. Risk engineering management insists that their systems are amazing despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

    Advice to Management

If the goal is to reduce expense ratio, adding layers of management, onerous systems, mindless paperwork, and self-eggrandizing "success stories" is counterproductive. Listen to your employees. We take surveys and the results are ignored. This company will be acquired unless leadership actually starts leading - not just rehashing what they did at their old company.

    Pros

You get to go home at the end of the day.

    Cons

This company is turning toxic at an astounding rate. They've stopped caring about the employees and started playing the blame game. Finding shortcuts to eliminate bonuses (that were included as part of projected salary during hiring) and generally self destructing beautifully.

They're also sprinkling false reviews to try and make themselves seem a bit palatable. You can spot them. They're short, and say "nothing is wrong lol".

    Advice to Management

Grow up. Treat your employees like adults.

    Some things you should note:

    - Don't stick to this "there's not a queue" line. We all went through training and know you can assign calls to specific agents.

    - Reward all of the agents who have stuck with you as you've skyrocketed rates and laughed while they try to write business to earn a living wage.

    - Take responsibility for YOUR mistakes.

I worked at The Hartford full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay, 9-5 hours for those that want a steady schedule, nice offices.

    Cons

Stressful, management is inept, training is lacking & leaves you unprepared for the demands, the workload is overwhelming and unfair (if your team member doesn't finish their work and you do, YOU have pick up their slack in the name of being "One Hartford"), no culture, you'e just a cog in the wheel of a massive company that only see dollar signs. Multiple employees in the Short Term Disability department went out of work on disability and mental health leaves due to the stress and exhaustion of the job, and mgmt did nothing about it. If you're a corporate, soulless drone, this is the place for you. Layoffs are also happening, so the company is likely beginning to tank due to the lack of leadership and total disregard for their employees, current or former.

    Advice to Management

Stop working your employees like slavers and have some compassion for the difficult and tedious jobs we have. Stop being so concerned with your metrics that you treat your analysts like numbers and not people with lives and emotions.

    Pros

If you do not have a personal life, family or commitments this company is for you.

    Cons

This company does not support their employees, they expect their workers to put their job before their family. They don't tell you that though instead they talk behind your back and will go out of their way to destroy you.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, as much as you listen to your supervisors, believe your employees as much as you believe your supervisors, and realize your supervisors aren't perfect.

    Pros

    The training program was organized

    Cons

    Benefits got worse with time
    Low Morale and High Turnover
Little advancement out of the claims world despite misery of those employees
Supervisor screwed me over after I left by agreeing to do a letter of rec for grad school and then 3 weeks before it was due stopped answering my calls and emails- clearly on purpose and didn't have the decency to answer me either way. This kind of thing was something entirely characteristic of her and the rest of management. I should have known better.

    Advice to Management

Be human and stop drinking the corporate cool aid so much

I worked at The Hartford full-time

    Pros

I liked my co-workers, and we had tons of theme days.

    Cons

If you need a day off it's almost impossible to get it. My manager was almost never in the office, but someone was doing a great job. Every day he came in later than me, left earlier, and read books at his desk. All of the managers were the same.
