I worked at The Home Depot part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid my bills for one semester of college

    Cons

    Everything else.
Was not that great of a place to work very "high school" feel. If you weren't "cool" enough or didn't hang out with the right people you were pretty much shamed. Paid my bills for a semester of college but was not a great experience don't even put the job on my resume. And during training they actually tell you not to talk to union reps or you'll be "let go".

    Advice to Management

Not much advice I can give to management I am not a manager just make it a better place to work where people like to go. Can't say it's this way at all Home Depots' but it definitely was here. Keep an eye on your stores.

    Pros

Coworkers rock! Store management and District level mgrs are great.

    Cons

Corporate is nuts! The don’t understand our culture. For them it is about hitting a metric.

    Advice to Management

Support your field managers. Quit trying to play gotcha!

I worked at The Home Depot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked for HD for 6 years in specialty department and I actually liked the job. HD is overall a good company to work for in terms of benefits in retail terms. They do offer 401 and employees stock sharing, tuition expenses, and health insurance. What I liked is the company also sends its employees to training as well especially for specialty departments.

    Cons

I can not obviously say this about every store but the one I worked at was in a small town and it never had good management. Management seemed incompetent when it came to delegation and organizations and they seemed to promote employees based on how friendly they were with each other not based on hard work. Instead of delegating the work equally between the team members, they piled all the work on the very a few associates who worked hard. Pay was very low and pay raises are only once a year for only .30 cents.

    Pros

At a district level, paid well, good benefits, good bonus structure. Great associates excluding the Regional team.

    Cons

Little support from Regional team. They have a gotcha mentality. They don't support and generally beat up the district team.calls are.
Low hourly pay for associate, very few full time hourly positions.

    Advice to Management

Corporate folks should listen in on the Regional calls! They might be surprised at how demotivating and uninspiring those calls are.

I worked at The Home Depot (More than a year)

    Pros

Good products including cabinet doors and hardware

    Cons

These were over priced products compared to companies who do the same thing. I had over 12,000 in commissions turned down in a week due to credit. I found out they reassign these accounts to some other company who works under their umbrella who can do a better price. I drove out a lot of gas to appointments that were supposed to be verified and frequently were not at home. Thats okay when you are on salary but really tough when you are a 1099 salesman.

    Advice to Management

Make it a base plus commission position.

    Pros

Great associates, great customers, great executive leadership

    Cons

Not all decision makers, especially at the Store Manager and District level continue to remain valued bases and servant leaders

    Advice to Management

Spend more time investing in value based individuals. Spend time in the stores teaching and training associates, to much time is spent prior to a scheduled walk preparing. It would be better to see the issues that are present and work to correct them, not just make a RVP or higher happy.
