I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This has been a steady job for me as I went through college. They have been flexible with my schedule regarding school and for the work I do, I feel like I am fairly compensated for working as a part time associate

    Cons

It is a retail store and you have to deal with normal retails situations.

I worked at The Home Depot full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very friendly environment (depending on which store), many opportunities to learn about products, acquire new skills, and good for a beginner resume. I was able to move departments and after showing excellent work ethic, I was able to move wherever I wanted to in the store, when the position was available. Learn how to use tools/equipment in the store. Good breaks (IF you have proper coverage...). Mainly, its a good place to start if you're young or keep you busy if you want somewhere to retire. Pretty good benefits, although I didn't make enough to afford those benefits..

    Cons

*In my experience* the harder you work, the more opportunities you get BUT the thinner you are stretched and you may feel very taken advantage of like I did. I did what was asked of me and more once management and other workers realized that, I didn't have much breathing space, skipped many breaks and didn't have much of a chance to wind down. I definitely think the more experience you have and the more training/qualifications you have, compensation should go up. No doubt wages should go up (they claim they pay better than bigger corps), but I think they can do better for the environment people are put in and especially with the amount of work people put in. I am glad I worked there and learned a lot but wish I worked there for a shorter period of time and moved on.

    Advice to Management

Keep on top of things, treat ALL employees with respect. Help them out, my manager at W Broad in Columbus, Ohio was great. The manager in my current location, quite the opposite. Learn to communicate properly with your workers and make sure things are kept up with. Most people there seem to be good, hardworking and caring people. Treat them how they deserve to be treated, please and thank you.

    Pros

The best part of working at Home Depot was my fellow associates, and the regular customers that you go to know on a first name basis

    Cons

It's retail. The hours suck, your schedule is never the same from day to day. The managers are either great, or the suck horribly. There was a ton of favoritism, and it made it hard to stay motivated or want to come to work if you weren't one of the favorites. This company also has a horrible attendance policy. Even with a doctors note, if you didn't have the sick time to cover your missed shift, it was counted against you.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of favoritism. And go back to the old school ways of dealing with attendance
