I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Pretty good insurance and benefits (non-monetary)
    - Lower level associates get paid roughly average retail pay, department managers and newly promoted salaried managers are getting hosed.
    - Associates are, for the most part, close-knit and willing to help each other
    - Company truly does promote the value of doing the right thing for the customer

    Cons

    - As with any retailer, management can vary wildly from store to store. Since there is a lot of pressure on tenured management, the path of least resistance is often followed whenever a conflict arises (both between store and customer, and store and associate. i.e. don't rock the boat)
    - Corporate seemingly fixes minor store level issues and ignores glaring ones
    - Some routes the company takes moderately help some associates but have complete opposite effect on others
-Work/life balance is a joke above the associate level

    Advice to Management

Department Managers are in some cases wildly under-paid while at the same time are the only associates outside of salaried management that don't have a consistent schedule. Asking us to tell our associates how much this will help their work/life balance while at the same time we are told it won't apply to us is a joke. Not to mention we were told that we wouldn't be used to plug holes in the schedule (we are).
Combining the 2 garden manager positions into 1 and lumber/building materials manager and millwork manager positions into 1 is the dumbest thing I've ever seen while working here. Whoever made that call made it to save money. They certainly have never had to work any of those jobs.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    The people I work with

    Cons

Pay is terrible for ALL hourly associates and the hours make it even worse. Stay away from the Hermiston Oregon store!!! Only two people got promoted to salaried manager in over 10 years of being open. Poorly managed store with no teaching and development program. A death trap in its truest sense.

    Advice to Management

Salaried managers make a decent living but all hourly associates “including supervisors” are paid scraps and can’t take on other jobs because of the “retail hours” excuse. Not for anyone with a working brain to stick with as a career. Good riddance!!!
