I have been working at The Home Depot part-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Paid sick time, paid vacation time, tuition reimbursement, great training, great work environment, honestly a place that just treats you like a working adult.

    Cons

They make you push services onto customers to try and drive store leads which is pretty obnoxious, can really get in the way of just helping customers. Sometimes don't staff enough.

    Advice to Management

    Be available and knowledgeable.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

      1) You get to work with some of the latest technologies in a collaborative environment. Recent IT transformation has made it more about teams of engineers who code and solve problems together. This is a welcome change from the previous model (before 2015) where tech leads/managers delegated the work with ridiculous deadlines and there was a huge dependency on contractors who took the knowledge along with them when they...

      Cons

      1) Home Depot strives to be an IT company but still treat IT teams as auxiliary. They are moving teams away from the main SSC building in Smyrna to smaller buildings in Marietta (MTC) to alleviate horrific parking issues. But this also means no access to the full-service gym, large cafeteria and; daycare. 2)You only get 6 federal holidays. You do not get the day after thanksgiving off FYI, so you have to use your...

      Advice to Management

Learn to do some coding so that you actually develop some empathy and appreciation for those who work through the roadblocks to deliver the product.

I worked at The Home Depot full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Good salary, however, it takes a while to get there.

      Cons

Clicky environment. Not a great place to be a designer. A lot of the designers, really have no idea what they are doing.

      Advice to Management

Hire people who are balanced and are ACTUALLY skilled.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Benefits are pretty great. Open work culture. Lots of competent developers either still growing or mentoring. Plenty of hackathons and opportunities for members of different teams across the org to share knowledge. Plenty of informative sessions on campus. OrangeMethod is pretty awesome.

      Cons

Some teams are a little resistant to work with each other. Politics can sometimes get in the way of work but it’s mostly not a problem. People have misgivings about pair programming and some can be sticklers about embracing pure TDD, which can sometimes stagnate progress. I worked with a lot of talented people but most of them were contractors and weren’t there for long before getting a new face to bring up to speed...

      Advice to Management

Incentivize teams to work together. Seek mid-long term commitments with associates. Communicate the need to follow procedures but also allow some elbow room.

      Cons

IT Network security is horrible..No care for people and how they impact you or your family. Treat contracts like dirt or worse..Expect 50 hours but can only submit 40

      Advice to Management

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time for more than a year

      Pros

One of my favorite pros is that everyone I’ve met is not only great at their role, but has a passion for it. There is a lot of team spirit and it’s obvious most people here at Home Depot love the company. The turnover rate is extremely low. Most people I’ve met had been in their roles 5+ years and were still happy. The ability to transition to a different area is encouraged as is learning new skills that benefit *any*...

      Cons

The benefits are surprisingly not as generous for SSC employees as with other major corporations I’ve worked for, but I am happy that the benefits are standard across all employees, including store (part time is soon getting the same as everyone else). I’m happy to have slightly less generous policies if it means all employees can qualify!

      Advice to Management

Couch any managers who have a higher turnover than normal for the company. People leave managers, not companies and while my manager is excellent I have heard of some that are not.
