I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team atmosphere. Always someone ready to help you get your tasks done. Everyone eager to help train other associates. Plenty of learning opportunities if you seek them. Some managers go out of their way to communicate with ALL associates during the day.

    Cons

Low pay. Difficult to get a full-time position. I worked very hard for the opportunity to go on full time which I was told was the only prerequisite, hard working. An opportunity came for me to go full time but the ASM elected to hire 4 part-timers instead. Very disheartening and took the desire to work hard away from me. Fluid schedules come with the territory so your hours are all over the chart. My particular manager barely knew my name and in all the time I worked there he never had a conversation with me. I don’t see how a manager can evaluate your progress with there is no dialog with the associate.

    Advice to Management

Don't backpedal when you tell an employee the only prerequisite for full time is hard work. A persons morale is shot when the opportunity passes them by. It's crucial that you make sure all ASM's have some dialog with each of their respective associates. This way they don't feel like worker ants. HR needs to be more involved with each associate. I've never had a conversation with HR except for the initial hiring day.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Home Depot is a stable company with relatively competitive benefits. The MET part of it has the plus of being a consistent weekday only schedule with a few rare exceptions.

    Cons

It's retail in a corporate setting. Wages are low. Raises are pathetic and on average do not keep up with the cost of living, so your annual raise is really a pay cut unless you get promoted. Until you've been promoted twice, even those increases are insulting for the added responsibilities. Hourly supervisors for example are responsible for hiring, discipline, terminations, drug testing, scheduling, vendor relations, project management, oversight of third party labor, and ordering of fixtures, hundreds of hardware inventory items, signage and supplies for employees. In almost all other companies, those combined responsibilities would fall on salaried management.

    Advice to Management

Every year, the annual survey of employees indicates that pay is too low. Every year any suggestion that pay be increased is met with 'well that's not going to happen, what else can we do?' treat people with respect for their dignity. Stop dumbing down the system so you can pay less. Start hiring the best and pay them accordingly. And for God's sake stop thanking the associates for their contribution to record profits while paying so little. Too many Home Depot employees have multiple jobs and/or government assistance.

    Pros

People, it's a job, Great starting pay for a first job.

    Cons

Managers have a lack of communication together at my store.

    Advice to Management

Have better communication with what needs to be done and realize that associates can do but only so much while trying to complete things for supervisors.
