I worked at The Home Depot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very sociable work environment and great people to work with. It's always busy so time always goes by fast. You have freedom to walk around and engage with customer all the time and usually you are not micromanaged. You're able to take restroom break, or regular breaks at your choosing, granted it's within reasonable time. Always a fun busy environment. Management varies, some managers are very cool and some expect to see you busy doing something every second.

    Cons

Sometimes there isn't enough coverage or help, usually in other department like plumbing, hardware or building materials. Garden and paint tend to be well staffed most of the time. Lots of lifting, work schedules sometime are not favorable, no weekend and holidays off (sometimes by very advanced requests) Pay is not super great, raises are small. In my opinion the best people are not the ones promoted, usually it's the ones that click with management that get promoted. Some Associates are super lazy and pass the puck or take long bathroom breaks.

    Advice to Management

Promote those workers who are most knowledgeable and seasoned rather than the kids that are always sucking up. Place more people in the departments that need it the most and not just based on sales. Plumbing gets slammed with go backs and tons of customers with lengthy questions and they onl3 or 4 associates while garden has 15 associates working but no one needs help in those departments so associates just hang around or disappear for hours.

I worked at The Home Depot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The health benefits packages are very expensive and the price goes up every year. 1 week vacation after 1 year, 2 weeks after 3 years. Great learning experience for the right person.

    Cons

In general upper management does not treat employees well. Never a set schedule they will schedule you to work sometimes 10 days straight. Sometimes they will have you close (work until 11:00 p.m. and then bring you back to open in the morning at 6:00am. Not good for working mothers or for students who are still in school, no work/life balance at all.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to ensure accociates are not worked 10 days straight opening and closing for students and mothers. Management needs to ensure they schedule closers and openers in every department every day. The stores would be maintained better. People would also have more time on there hands for family or vacations and other activities.
