I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

*pay advancement is great. If you’re a hard worker and work in a specialty dept or Pro, you get paid more than an average dept worker.
*not as strict as other retail stores
*you could move up to be a manager or district manager without a college degree

    Cons

*favoritism is always at play. Sometimes it can work for you or against you
-someone else might get a promotion over you because they’re liked more
-you might have been late 3 times and get written up but because they like someone else, they could have been late 20 times and it wouldn’t matter

I worked at The Home Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great pay for an entry level job, co-workers are pretty good, get a pretty good workout walking all day and lifting stuff.

    Cons

Like most retail, your hours will vary every week, so you never know your schedule more than 2-3 weeks out. This can also make having a regular sleep routine impossible.

The work can be very physically demanding, but there is a strong emphasis on safety.

Being an entry level position, you will be surrounded with people who dislike their job.

Your efforts may feel unrecognized by management.

    Advice to Management

Offer some kind of incentive for great work performance other than the existing profit sharing model. Splitting your earnings with lazy people is no fun.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work, if you don't mind doing your job, your supervisor's job and few co-worker's jobs at a pay rate that is the same as someone that doesn't even know their clock in number yet.

    Cons

You will be trained during your work hours and you will have customers complaining that you don't help them enough even if you bend over backwards for them, then management will take you to the office and tell you how poorly your work performance is only based on that last customer complain not the other calls from customers saying how great of a job you did helping them and meeting their needs.

    Advice to Management

Schedule people for training before they are put on the sales floor. Train everyone on Reach Truck and OP. Two ballymore and 2 reach truck machines would be nice and remove old broken ladders from stores. And make sure you praise those that do the job of two and three employees not only those who come to work do their job, tell others that they are too busy to help or refuse to spot for those who drive. And keep specialists in their department not all over the store if you are going to complain about their sales numbers.

I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Advancement opportunity
    Good-coworkers
    Easy job
    Overall company culture

    Cons

    Bad scheduling
Management makes or breaks the job. For a $100 billion company, Home Depot sure is cheap. Always dimming the lights in the store (we have no control over it) it gets so dark you really can’t read what you’re trying to buy and customers are always complaining. Takes much longer to restock because it’s so dark. I work at one of the highest sales volume stores in the district and they are always asking people to stay/come in because they don’t know how to schedule enough people. Unacceptable.

    Advice to Management

Don’t promote associates to DS/ASM just because you like them. Promote the right person for the job. Some of these managers have no business being in their positions and don’t even know how to talk to people.
