I worked at The Home Depot part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Ability to multi-task within the department, selling flooring, wall coverings, window coverings, tiles and associated supplies. Provide in store demos, can float to other departments as needed. Encouraged to train in more than one area. Profit sharing.

    Cons

Hours are not flexible, very difficult to get time off. Required to work most holidays. Training on line and for job certifications is difficult, employee is expected to fit online training during work shift. They do not like OT, even if your are in the middle of writing up a huge order, you hand off to the next shift. Customer is left with very little customer satisfaction, when order is shifted to someone that has not worked with them.

    Advice to Management

Allow for training in a classroom environment, as well as on line, allow sales to complete order instead of hand-off.

Rude customers, micro-managing supervisors, and boring training videos.

    Advice to Management

Promote people who actually deserve the position, not just your friends.

I worked at The Home Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ability to learn about flooring products, window coverings, tile as well as cover for other areas like garden, paint and welcome customers.

    Cons

Expected to self teach and train on computer, pass tests, then go back to work and implement. No real training, work week is subject to change based on other departments employee attendance. Basically if someone calls in sick etc. you will be called in to cover with less than two hour break from previous shift. You have no personal life, work week is subject to change. Company wide meetings are held at 5:30 am. You come in stand for meeting, go home then come back in at 10:00am for your shift. You are expected to work weekends, holidays. Can not take time off even for a funeral unless you can obtain coverage for your shift. It does not matter if requested time off is weeks months in advance. Management and supervisors can be snarky and un-professional. There is an employee hotline to call in employee issues without reprisal.

    Advice to Management

Classroom style training in conjunction with online training would greatly benefit employees. Shifts times need to be managed properly. Supervisor, Management training in HR rules and communication needs improvement.! Team building, cooperation, positive reinforcement, acknowledge a good job should be conveyed to employees not just monthly but when it is warranted.

    Pros

Benefits are better than average. I enjoyed co-workers and helping customers.

    Cons

Young managers lacking maturity. Not enough people scheduled to meet customer needs. When co-workers are on breaks employees must cover multiple departments, Stressful job. Really high turn over.

    Pros

Really motivational and supportive with associates when they are working well which is really important in a work environment, in my opinion.

    Cons

Lack of teaching skills because it is very busy most of the time and even lack of resources, more of a self taught experience so far for me.

    Advice to Management

Train associates more rather than just throwing them out to the sales floor because not everyone is self taught and has the motivation to be.

I have been working at The Home Depot part-time

    Pros

nice people, nice location, nice coworkers, coffee is free for customers too. And weather is nice too.

    Cons

Got hired on the first day of June, did not give me the salary I agreed to which was $13.50, and also the past 2 days got delayed my 15 minute breaks, and got delayed my lunch break too, and also today management cut my lunch break short, they told me only 30 minutes, it is supposed to be my usual 1 hour lunch break.

    Advice to Management

Care more about your employees, stop ripping them off of their money, and their breaks. Fill in the schedule accordingly. 1 hour lunch is 1 hour lunch break, NOT 30 minutes.
