I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really motivational and supportive with associates when they are working well which is really important in a work environment, in my opinion.

    Cons

Lack of teaching skills because it is very busy most of the time and even lack of resources, more of a self taught experience so far for me.

    Advice to Management

Train associates more rather than just throwing them out to the sales floor because not everyone is self taught and has the motivation to be.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are decent, hardworking, hourly types. This is not a place made up of silver spoons. I'd say most people fit into the 40 years old and under or the 55 and over crowd. There are many retired folks from other walks of life that are working as associates to "get out of the house" or to stay viable. They are mostly all very good people.
Upper management seems very hands off. They don't treat you differently. In fact, I'd say they are nicer than most upper management at other retail businesses I've worked at.
The nature of the hardware/construction supply retail business is lowkey vs. grocery, costco, or sports equipment. There are no real incentives to liquidate stuff. Stuff goes on sale, but that timing, prices, and location within the store are determined by corporate.

    Cons

There are always the usual personal stuff(people that just don't get along with certain people) and I'm sure there is some level of politics but I don't care or get involved in any of that stuff. The immediate supervisor I have is not from a pretentious or college background BUT she works hard and has been with HD for more than a decade. I respect that.
Again, there are many older, retired folks who have completed careers in many other fields so this adds to the makeup of your working peers. I think this is a unique attribute to the HD.

    Advice to Management

More introductions, more chances to meet and introduce yourselves other than just a pic in the breakroom.

I have been working at The Home Depot part-time

    Pros

nice people, nice location, nice coworkers, coffee is free for customers too. And weather is nice too.

    Cons

Got hired on the first day of June, did not give me the salary I agreed to which was $13.50, and also the past 2 days got delayed my 15 minute breaks, and got delayed my lunch break too, and also today management cut my lunch break short, they told me only 30 minutes, it is supposed to be my usual 1 hour lunch break.

    Advice to Management

Care more about your employees, stop ripping them off of their money, and their breaks. Fill in the schedule accordingly. 1 hour lunch is 1 hour lunch break, NOT 30 minutes.

I worked at The Home Depot part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, room to grow and take initiative, lots of tasks to do

    Cons

Employees can be stretched thin at times, too much company self-promotion, encourage you to take up jobs that can increase liability and responsibility (heavy machinery) but no compensation for this.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people or have more people on the floor at a given time. If someone learns to use forklifts etc. they deserve a pay bump because it can increase liability on their part, it does not seem worth it to learn these things if you are getting paid the same as coworkers who have a smaller applied skillset and are not as responsible for safety as you are.

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They will hire anyone; any age, any experience level

    Cons

The wages are so low that even at full time you're still not making a living wage.
I understand that this is all about profit but when you consistently increase workloads and demands while decreasing staff you're going to lose money.
    Project timelines are hopelessly unrealistic

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to the people who work in the stores.
If you treat your associates like they are an integral part of the company you will increase that giant mountain of gold you're sitting on.
Your 'success sharing' is a ponzi scheme. Pay real wages and you will get real results
Leave Atlanta, do some 'undercover boss' work. Try to complete projects in an actual store with actual customers in it.
Please call up your left hand and tell it what your right hand is doing.
