I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fellow associates are great. Most very helpful. Seems very family oriented.

    Cons

Terrible training and along with that just thrown out to the wolves. Then often put down for not knowing things. Understaffed, scheduled second week by myself to work the service desk and returns with not being trained at the desk... Everyone starting at the same pay rate is insane. Customer service desk is very stressful and VERY underpaid.

    Advice to Management

Better TRAINING before being sent out to flounder... Have had several customers commenting back “shame on The Home Depot” Fairer compensation based on your department not just a pay EVERY new employee gets.

I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Teamwork here contributes to the overall morale of the associates. It can be experienced from time to time.

    Cons

Not enough growth opportunities, only for the few. Lack of associates from time to time on the front-end (cashiering). There is a Medium to High Turn-Around-Rate for the front-end of the Store at the store located in Seattle, WA (in the Sodo District).

    Advice to Management

Emphasize strengths more often, and encourage employees by rewarding them more often with incentives especially for those who are selling product and/or are signing up customers for HD Credit Cards (Consumer and Commercial).

The Current Incentives (As of 2016/2017) That Are Given Are: (You Get To Choose One Single Item Per Sign-Up for signing up Customers for a Home Depot Credit Card: A Candy Bar, Potato Chip, Bottled Water, Bottled Coffee Drink, Bottled Carbonated Drink, Peanuts, and Gum.).

    Pros

The company values align with my own; giving back, taking care of customers and each other.

    Cons

Lack of communication as well as consistent managerial decisions and lack of follow through

    Advice to Management

They should have a 15 minute overlap at minimum to discuss the days events, issues etc. Have a consistent message for employees and timely feedback for growth and development.

"The Orange Promise and delivering upon it."

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability to transfer to another store, very good insurance options, paid vacation and sick/personal days, success sharing, investment options, wide variety of opportunities and shifts available, associate recognition program(s).

    Cons

Rarely if ever staffed well enough to deliver upon The Orange Promise. Expectations that require more than possible, unless staffing were adequate and all transactions and systems worked perfect all the time. Ratings of customer satisfaction that put your store in the cellar, unless the VOC rating is a 10. Micro managing does not enhance the customer experience. Treating DS's like children and not allowing them to be empowered to make the intelligent choice, without higher up approval with regard to working extra hours within reason.

    Advice to Management

If the desire is to be the #1 Customer Service provider in all Retail; realistic Metric evaluation/ranking methods and more faith in your DS's choices needs to be accepted, rather than blocked. Intelligent hiring and Intelligent in-store promotion needs to be implemented. It would be nice to assume all are capable of any position, however, the reality of life is far from that. Micro Managing for instant gratification at checkout or order pickup needs to be done less and more intelligently. Feeling threatened for making the right choice in the attempt to deliver upon The Orange Promise, should not be a feeling a supervisor should be feeling. A supervisor should not feel like a child asking for permission to have a cookie when it comes to making choices necessary to deliver upon The Orange Promise. It seems too often, those in management at all levels, are more concerned about achieving numbers for metrics to appease those above them, while the delivery of The Orange Promise suffers as a result. I'm not a gymnast or circus performer, I really don't feel we should have to walk the tightrope everyday or have to a score a 10 to win. We don't have just one judge, we have 100's, even 1000's of them, and they do not all use the same set of guidelines.
