I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Home Depot provided me with excellent training. They have a very professional management team. The Home Depot offers excellent benefits.

    Cons

The market in which they hired me to work was not well prepared. The leads were practically non existent. The job was commission only, therefore I was not making any money.

    Advice to Management

Make sure your stores and the community are aware of the product availability and educate them on the product.

I worked at The Home Depot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours and advancement opportunities. You get Christmas and Thanksgiving off. The management is pretty good. Quarterly profit sharing available.

    Cons

They are very strict on time. Because the store has not as many employees as most box stores, there's a lot of drama.

    Advice to Management

Train managers and supervisors to be professional.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunities for all employees. Not just the "favorite" associates.

    Pros

I have so much fun at my job everyday, making fun of the stupid management. I can look at any bay in the store and tell them all the problems with it and all they see is oh nothing. They set no standards that are maintained. I told management about $50,000 worth of generators 2 months ago that were all in the overheads in 20 different overheads in the store and not one has come out of the overhead yet. I have found thousands of dollars worth of ceramic tile in the overheads nothing done. They complain about markdowns but let things sit in the overhead til they are marked down to nothing. Our fabulous store manager told are bit people when they find merchandise in the overheads that are marked 75% off let him know and he will take care of it. SOP says no clearance in the overheads but I don't think he knows that He was in the military before he came to Home Depot 2 years later becomes a store manager WOW you would think he knows everything but I've never known any retail genius that leaves merchandise in stockrooms or overheads and doesn't worry about it till it gets to 75% off. Anyway it is a hilarious place to work.

    Cons

tedious poor management that think they know everything don't listen to their associates who probably know more than they do. Typical problem where a company grows too fast for qualified upper management. It implements the good old boys club

    Advice to Management

    listen to your associates

    Pros

job is secure, and it is a financially secure co.

    Cons

having untrained manageres. working hours are not thought out-example-close at 10pm and open the next morning at 6am. home depot no longers respects professionals in their field-example-you do not need to know anything about paint, just learn to mix colors.

    Advice to Management

better training for store managers and assistanat managers. Better "in store" training for associates.

    Pros

Lots of training available; opportunities for advancement available. Management varies greatly from store to store. Some managers are terrific, and that attitude filters down through the ranks. Company is large, which is a plus if you want to relocate. Benefits are available.

    Cons

Schedules are erratic which makes planning your personal life with family and friends difficult. The computer system is out of the dark ages and not all staff has access to a computer without leaving their own department. Recognition seems to be for years of service or for your birthday (?) rather than job performance. Many shifts are understaffed, which makes customer service almost impossible or non-existant. Retail is difficult enough without feeling as if you are constantly on the defensive with unhappy customers.

    Advice to Management

Twice a year performance reviews are nice, but feedback from department heads and assistant managers more often would be very beneficial.
