  1. "Place with great potential and a CEO who is trying to drive the right kind of change....but tough to move the beast!"

I worked at The Home Depot

    Pros

Company with great heritage and some of the best core values in retail! CEO is trying to make the right kind of changes...

    Cons

Still quagmired in 'ol boys network' mentality. Leaders, with the rare exception (unfortunately, too rare!) are very parochial and not able to make the trade-offs necessary to drive both strategy and responsiveness

    Advice to Management

Need to be able to look at the big picture and work towards the best result for the company as a whole by making the right compromises. Walk the talk and promote talent based on ability and not relationships!

I have been working at The Home Depot

    Pros

The history of service and dedication to the customer is still there despite all the leadership changes. The company has a strong balance sheet and will survive.

    Cons

It is a large organization and therefore politics is always a factor. Given the lack of new store openings and their return to focusing on their core business, it is unclear where any opportunity is going to come from going forward (other than attrition of existing management -- which should be minimal given the recent house cleaning).

    Advice to Management

While it is good to re-focus on the core business, don't let the pendulum swing the other way as far as blindly following all the "Home Depot" veterans. Certainly Nardelli was quick to discount anyone who hadn't worked for GE -- now it seems that "in going back to your roots" you are discounting anyone who hasn't worked for The Home Depot for 10+ years.

I worked at The Home Depot

    Pros

Descent base pay, pretty good benefits, and Atlanta is a great city in which to live and work. The people are nice, and lower and middle management are competent and supportive. Stores are generally located in larger cities and towns in good neighborhoods.

    Cons

Corporate red tape runs rampant. Senior management working against the interests of the shareholders. Long hours, and a poor work life balance. Benefits could be better. Home Depot used to be the industry leader until Nardelli got his hands on the treasury. Morale could be better and was better when we weren't getting our lunch handed to us by Lowes.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the ideas and feedback coming from middle management and the field.

I have been working at The Home Depot

    Pros

Strong company; ability to make an impact.

    Cons

Inadequate and antiquated systems and processes.

    Advice to Management

Allow more career growth opportunities to top talent. Make it easier for people move into other cross functional roles within the company.
