I worked at The J. M. Smucker Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Orrville campus is beautiful and always seems to be expanding. Good benefits and free-flowing coffee.

    Cons

Every department is run very differently. Those in customer service jobs are generally very unhappy with management.

I worked at The J. M. Smucker Company as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked as a Information Solutions Intern (Software developer intern)

-The compensation if you include the housing stipend was very competitive.
    -The cafeteria is incredible.
-The people I worked with were wonderful and very smart.
-Lots of fun activities for the interns and even full-time employees.
-Very open atmosphere with upper management. Even as an intern, I got face to face time with just about every upper level management in the department person except the C-level.
-As an intern, I was given work that was actually meaningful. I worked on a crucial proprietary software port and felt like a full member of the team. My opinion was actually asked and regarded unlike other positions I've had. Because the work was interesting, I rarely felt like the day was dragging on.
-Did I mention the cafeteria? It's amazing.

    Cons

-It's in Orrville, OH which is 45 minutes from the nearest city Akron, OH, so you pretty much have to live in the middle of nowhere Ohio which was the biggest issue for me. I ended up just driving down to Ohio State every other weekend just so I had something to do.
-The reason the cafeteria is so good is because there are almost no other options in the area.
-Very old fashioned. We had "Formal Mondays" which required a tie and many people wore jackets as well. The rest of the week was business casual, and once a month there was "Casual Friday" were you got to where jeans instead of slacks (still had to wear a dress shirt and shoes though), but only if you donated to their charity. I never bothered with it the whole summer.
-They expect you to work there for most if not all of your career which was one of the reasons I did not receive a full time offer. Overall though, I would highly recommend this internship to anyone.

    Advice to Management

Try to help interns find housing and try to help them coordinate and find other interns as roommates. It was every person for themselves when I was looking for places to stay, and while I didn't want a roommate, I would've liked to live nearer to other interns so we could hang out on the weekends.

    Pros

The culture is great and the facilities are very nice.

    Cons

Only candidates with relatives or graduates of Akron University or Ashland University are ever considered for intern or permanent positions.

    Advice to Management

You're missing out on a lot of great talent by not broadening your employment/internship considerations.

    Pros

Great atmosphere, flexible work hours, room to grow. Management is very supportive and there is a ton of opportunity to learn. All employees are genuinely friendly and work together as a team.

    Cons

It would be nice if the IS dept had the opportunity to work at home one or two days a week.

I worked at The J. M. Smucker Company as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, great benefits and amazing atmosphere. Everyone is treated as an equal.

    Cons

Internship program is not great when it comes to being younger in college. The longer it takes to finish your degree the more you'll be bounced from department to department. You gain more experience, but don't settle in anywhere.

    Advice to Management

Hold on to interns longer, give them more responsibility. They'll bond with their coworkers better and make a 'home' out of a department.

    Pros

Incredible place to work, the management team really knows how to let people know they are investing in them as employees.

    Cons

While I was there I thought the organization could have let people have more autonomy in their roles.

    Advice to Management

Continue to invest in your people and let them share in the excitement that is the growth of the company.
