I have been working at The Joint Commission as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1) Most people are friendly, helpful and courteous. Quiet, respectful and personable working environment.
    2) Despite numerous projects, work load is manageable and stress level is not high compared to my previous experience
    3) Nice perks: to be able to work remotely for certain groups, flexible hours, free coffee, subsidized cafeteria, and a parking garage (nice protection during winter, summer, rainy seasons)
    4) Pay and benefits are pretty decent with bonus and pension (which is not usually offered anymore)
    5) Newly renovated building; office building is less than 5 minutes from expressway
    6) Met a lot of people who's been around 10-20 years

    Cons

    1) A lot of people working beyond their retirement age.
    2) Some processes are too manual. Younger people (young in the company) need to cater to old ways which creates inefficiencies.
    3) A lot of conference rooms (too many) and lights are always on even when not in use.

    Advice to Management

Despite busy schedules, need to look at processes closely to streamline and gain time to focus on other important projects. And get to know not only your direct reports but other people who are 2,3,4 levels down. Engage people.

I have been working at The Joint Commission full-time

    Pros

Being able to work from home and overall benefits are okay, but not enough to keep anyone happy.

    Cons

Management and leadership is terrible. Work place abuse and bullying. Top down decision making. They hire very smart people and keep them in a box. If you are of color, there are even less opportunities. People are intentionally given opportunities that put them in places for advancements. These opportunists are not given fairly. There is a lot of disrespect and cutting people off. If you cannot distance yourself from your work, this will affect all other areas of your life including your health and wellbeing.
HR is useless! No one will protect you. They talk about a safety culture and it appears that way on the outside. But that is not true. Bullies in management and leadership are protected (as if they need it!)
Projects are a joke! If you are a leader in your field, do not work at The Joint Commission. You will be extremely disappointed. If you are not progressive and just want to go to work and not make a difference or be heard, then this is the place for you.
Completely disappointed and I am very forgiving but the behavior I have witnessed and have been a victim of is completely unexceptable.

    Advice to Management

Although I know I am wasting my breath, be fair and be of equal opportunity. Stop being bullies. This is not 7th grade. People come to work to contribute to society. You are inhibiting most people. Stop giving false hope and tell people how it really is. Allow staff to contribute to decision making. Stop giving the appearance that that is what is happening.

I have been working at The Joint Commission full-time

    Pros

Great team-building, telecommuting options, awesome benefits. Younger generation of employees are very friendly (older are not however).

    Cons

HR is completely useless/not supportive at all. If you are an experienced clinician looking to work with similar people, you wont get it here. Believe it or not, most management staff are non-clinical with no healthcare experience. I think the general healthcare public would be disappointed to know that.

    Pros

Benefits. Great people, fun team building and company gatherings. Mission & Values. Had implemented and encouraged change initiatives effectively. Great support from executive leadership. Has adopted telecommuting into the culture.

    Cons

Depending on career goals, may be best to advance externally. Professional development courses are interesting, but there needs to be further succession planning.
