I have been working at The Medicines Company as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I've learned an amazing amount of information about bacteria, antibiotics, how to analyze vast amounts of data and methods of science while interning here.

    Cons

The people working at the San Diego location aren't outgoing or socially open to communication so being a talkative person can be difficult. If you don't have a basic knowledge of all antibiotics on the market and what they do within two months of working here it is extremely difficult to be respected by coworkers in the lab.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that the communication between coworkers is appropriate and that everyone in the lab is being treated with respect, even when starting from the bottom.

    Pros

They are Very focused on the science and outcomes of heart disease. They are committed to heart disease. They create opportunities for scientists.

    Cons

Because of how small the company is, it is such a politically charged environment, with an extremely concentrated power base, and few checks and balances on executives. Owing to the founder, they are very skewed towards British culture and values. There is a pretty clear caste system, and quite a bit of bigotry as well. Not a great career path outside of physicians. They are still learning the pharmaceutical business and while they are huge in their specialty market, it is often surprising the types of mistakes they make given the pharma talent they have tried to recruit. Despite high potential for their products, I have not held on to my stock because of the uncertainty, and some concern regarding management talent currently on board.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes founders aren't always the best leadership for the company.

I have been working at The Medicines Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

MDCO is great place because you really feel like the CEO cares. There's opportunity to work on different projects and learn new skills.

    Cons

However, the inspiration doesn't carry over to do day to day activities. Management is marginal and we're incapable of sticking to our strategy for more than one year.

    Advice to Management

Focus. Reduce the politics. Thin out the underachievers. Stick to a strategy and make sure you have the right people to do the job. Hold your leaders accountable and the team will follow.

I have been working at The Medicines Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the managers treat you like an adult. We don't have all of the ridiculous documentation required by a lot of pharmaceutical companies, i.e. call reporting etc. Activities are based on how it moves the business, not simply activity for activities sake.

    Cons

Can be very disjointed and indecisive. Wide variations in the quality of management.

    Advice to Management

Develop enough trust to learn what is really going on.

I worked at The Medicines Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary, good benefits, a good level of independence to develop your work.
It is good as an entry level to biotech and to build your reputation in the market.

    Cons

Career opportunities depends on your internal network, if you are well connected with ruling group you might find opportunity to develop your career, if not, you will struggle to move up and even to present your projects and results, nepotism runs free in the company.

    Advice to Management

Networking and building relationship are important but nepotism is not.
