I have been working at The Museum of Flight part-time

I worked at The Museum of Flight part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Museum of Flight hosts the largest collection of planes in one place in the Pacific Northwest. They have a fantastic docent program and value their volunteers.

    Cons

Whenever mistakes were made got shrugged off, little guidance. Upon leaving the Museum of Flight I left on Good Terms, it was like they were trying to keep me there. The wage is not livable for the area and management needs to work with employees skills to help retain them.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to appreciate and thank your employees so that there is less turn over.

I have been working at The Museum of Flight part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I'm honestly proud to work here. When everything goes right, it is wonderful. Great mentorship from more experienced coworkers, president/director is very accessible/easy to talk to. Very accommodating and fair to the many student part-timers that work there. They promote internally when possible.

    Cons

Lower pay for part-timers than at any similar-sized institutions in the area b/c they're technically in Tukwila and don't have to abide by Seattle minimum wage (even though they claim to be a Seattle museum) Takes forever to hear back from management about anything because the message has to go through every link in the chain of command; middle management intercepts the pass frequently

    Advice to Management

    - Keep trying, recent changes seem to be helping. - Please just be honest. Don't tell people 2-3 "ranks" below you that you have an open door policy and then secretly tell your managers to field messages.

I have been working at The Museum of Flight full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The museum is a really cool place to work. Amazing history, cool artifacts and innovative education programs for all ages. People here really care about the work that they do and are really nice. There is new leadership (in the last year or so) and they really care about the employees and want to make positive changes.

    Cons

They need to provide more training and development. For a non-profit organization, their pay is good but people have lots of choices in Seattle so they may need to pay a little more to compete

    Advice to Management

There have been some really good changes in the past year. Keep listening to your employees and be visible at all levels. Make sure you spend time out of your offices and getting to know the people that work for you. This isn't a negative - just a reminder to build relationships at all levels of the museum.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at The Museum of Flight part-time for less than a year

    Pros

It always really fun to walk into any exibit and see all the wonderful pieces. As some one who enjoys planes, space, and going to museums this was a wonderful job. It's great to talk and learn from the guests as well some of whom flew the types of planes sitting in the museum. Also every once in a while you get some extra tickets for friend or family.

    Cons

Sometimes you may have to work on a project that you are not fully prepared or commited to.

I worked at The Museum of Flight full-time

    Pros

The staff was generally friendly, you interact with visitors from all over the world, and the docents have often led very interesting lives. It is not a difficult job at all.

    Cons

It is boring, boring work. Some days you feel like you're just a warm body in a corner of the museum, loading the occasional sweaty 3rd grader into a flight simulator.

    Advice to Management

Interact with your visitor assistant staff more. It felt like we were the last people you thought of when considering any changes or events, and yet we are the first people that interact with visitors. Allowing opportunities to feel heard and involved in the museum's day-to-day business could help energize a largely bored staff.

I worked at The Museum of Flight part-time

    Pros

Hourly pay was decent but nothing else was good.

    Cons

Bad management, lack of following rules and management doesn't follow the rules set by the museum and sets a bad example for staff.

    Advice to Management

    Get new management.
