I worked at The Oakland Museum Of California full-time for more than a year

    Pros

wonderful friendly hardworking lower level staff. Fun work environment. Beautiful facility/grounds

    Cons

While an employee of the Oakland Museum, I survived an injury that left me in the hospital for weeks and physically disabled. When I discussed returning to work, I was promptly fired. The administration even had the gall to tell me they were doing "what they thought was best for me" instead of giving me a choice. It felt like being thrown out like trash, with no income, health insurance, etc. I had really loved my job...

I worked at The Oakland Museum Of California full-time

    Pros

The collaborative work and genuine spirit of everyone who works there makes for some very proud days working there. The leadership is strong and approachable.

    Cons

Compensation is not comparable to Bay Area cost of living and there aren't enough career paths or opportunities for raises to keep many people there for more than a few years.

I have been working at The Oakland Museum Of California full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Oakland Museum of California has one of the greatest work cultures I have ever had the pleasure to work in. The staff and mission are tremendous. The museum is making great strides to hire more diversely to reflect the demographics of the community it aims to serve. The exhibitions being planned and the questions being asked are forward and the institution is looking to do great work. The museum challenges its employee...

    Cons

Salary. The hard and fast reality is that while you won't find a better institution to work for in terms of culture and work satisfaction, the museum is not paying market rate. In a staff meeting reporting on the community served, an administrator reported that the museum audience was separated into two categories for evaluation, low income and above low income. What’s insulting is that a majority of the full-time...

    Advice to Management

You are missing an opportunity to lead the field. You are in a unique position on the Museum stage to make a statement about income-based inequalities and you are letting the opportunity pass you by. Your issues with employee turn over are solely that you aren’t paying top talent enough to stay. Showing respect to your community includes being a leader in the way you treat your internal community. Appreciation of hard-working...

    Cons

I worked at The Oakland Museum Of California part-time

    Pros

Great public programs! Special features and exhibits throughout the year are thoughtfully done, i.e., Days of the Dead, guest speakers, etc. Overall, friendly staff throughout the departments.

    Cons

Lack of funding for programs seems to be in flux on a regular basis. Many employees are on a contract basis only, meaning, you work on a project for 3-4 months, then you're out of a job.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps hiring WAY skilled grant writers would help with funding allocations.

I worked at The Oakland Museum Of California full-time

    Pros

The OMCA has an amazing interdisciplinary collection of art, history, and natural sciences. The majority of the staff there are wonderful--professional, intelligent, dedicated.

    Cons

There is one person in the organization that has made the place a toxic work environment for everyone he deals with. There has been a exodus of staff--many of whom have been there for many many years. It's very sad, because this used to be a great institution.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and smell the coffee. Re-naming jobs and departments with titles that are meaningless outside the institution does not make you innovative.

I have been working at The Oakland Museum Of California full-time

    Pros

Transparent management decisions. Highly collaborative work environment, supportive staff. Best CEO I've ever worked under - she really cares about her staff and is a visionary.

    Cons

Salaries are low, and raises have not been given in years. Collaborative work environment is generally good, but can lead to over-meeting and time wasted. Non-hierarchical work structure can lead to role confusion.

    Advice to Management

Employees are exhausted by being overworked and underpaid. If you can't increase salaries, at least offer perks like social outings or vacation time.
