    Positive Outlook

    Pros

The pay was great if you worked hard and had sales talent. The amount of material I learned when it came to how to sell advertising, how to create ads, and how the newspaper industry worked overall was so wonderful It was like a two year college course but they paid me :)

    Cons

The people at the top....way up top that you never met expected more than some could handle and their expectations would sometime be too high. Sometimes it seemed like the only thing that mattered was the health of the company and not the employee.

    Advice to Management

Be much more compassionate and understanding to the people who work for you. Treat the employee like they were a close friend or relative and instead of acting disappointed or mad at them, turn it around and pat them on their back as long as you know they tried hard, even if they don't meet your high standards.

  8. "This company is being run into the ground by its owners. There are many loyal customers but no support."

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at The Oakland Press full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The independent work environment in the circulation department is enjoyable. Daily deadlines make every day different and exciting. There are many opportunities to learn new skills and hone problem solving skills.

    Cons

Little to no support from administration. Any investment in the company is poured in to the digital side of the organization, leaving print media blowing in the wind. The writing is on the wall for anyone who works in circulation and the administration won't admit to anything, won't follow through with requests and deny rampant rumors until the absolute last possible minute.

    Advice to Management

Change comes from the top down. If you want to improve your customer base you have to show that you're willing to commit to making a better product. Simply passing the cost on to the customer and the carriers, who can afford it the least, is going to run this company in to the ground. You have to develop loyalty not only in your customers but your employees as well.
