I worked at The Ohio State University part-time

    Pros

Significant resources available for employee development.
It felt good to be a part of a successful, nationally-respected organization.

    Cons

It's a large organization, so the cons are related to its size. The resources are significant but there are a ton of departments and sometimes it's difficult to get things done quickly and efficiently.

I worked at The Ohio State University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

OSU is a very diverse organization and offers many different positions to support both the university and medical center. Great benefits and wellness incentives.

    Cons

OSU is a huge organization and one can feel lost, overwhelmed in the bureaucracy. The workload of my position in was too varied which made the number of responsibilities and duties very difficult to complete in a timely manner given all the meetings we had to attend. There are actually meetings about meetings.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and use employees' feedback to make improvements.

I have been working at The Ohio State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

OSU is very diverse. It has many different departments which are all run completely independent. My department has a good work/life balance. Hours are usually flexible, as it's typically up to your manager. There are many benefits like the ability to get sporting tickets at a discounted rate. Benefits, while having gone up quite a bit over the years, are now very similar to most large corporations. Annual raises are the norm however there is very rarely a bonus structure. It is typically a very "safe" place to work. Either your job has to be eliminated or you have to really screw up to get fired.

    Cons

It's in Columbus, OH. Because you have to really screw up to get fired, if you are a good employee, you can get stuck picking up the slack for someone else. Pay can be a little lower than large corporate, but they have been doing much better about that.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within as much as you can as long as it is appropriate.
