    Pros

Ohio State offers the best of the traditional Research I University - Midwestern culture, consistent focus on academic excellence. The compensation when compared to peer institutions (Big 10 schools) is quite reasonable. Treatment of graduate students varies greatly by department, but I have found that the University as a whole provides numerous opportunities for graduate students to prepare themselves for future research careers.

    Cons

As with any public university, the pressure of the state and federal budget on the institution is continual. There is significant concern that salaries for faculty and graduate student stipends will not be competitive with private institutions and industry.

    Advice to Management

Focus on building collaborations between academic disciplines (more interdisciplinary centers, joint graduate programs, etc), rather than limiting management to mitigating turf battles between Department Chairs.

    Pros

The best reason to work at the Ohio State University is the extensive academic resources available. The quantity and quality of knowledgeable individuals supports the high level of research performed. The additional benefits of a working here are related to the size of the university (i.e. an amazing fitness center, community outreach progams, libraries, etc). My experience here has been positive largely due to the quality of my research adviser.

    Cons

The immense size can be overwhelming. You have to actively work to find a place for yourself within the academic community. The location of the university can be undesirable, however, Columbus offers a number of good communities.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more training outside of core technical subjects.

    Pros

Very laid back environment. Many paid off holidays. Management is very good. Great environment. You get to participate in many activities. If you have kids, they get to go to school almost for free. (i think osu pays for the bigger part of tution) . You get free or almost free access to a state of the art recreation facility. They also have great bonuses, and since its civil service job, if you work for 20 years for them you get AWESOME retirment package. Good luck.

    Cons

Maybe pay could be a little better. However, u get less money and less stress. So, its up to you what you value more.

    Pros

This job provides great experience working in a lab setting. It works with mixing chemicals and the preparation of labs.

    Cons

The pay is low, but, the experience is much greater than the benefits that come from the position. This position is great for college students.

    Advice to Management

The management is all very cooperative and friendly. They take new employees in with open arms and accept all comers.

    Pros

They have world class researchers with enough funding to enable you to pursue a variety of projects. There are also some excellent interdisciplinary programs.

    Cons

compared to other Big 10 schools the salary is a bit lower and they don't cover as much of the benefit costs.

    Advice to Management

Work on improving the compensation (especially medical benefits) for graduate researchers to be in line with the other Big Ten schools.

Work to compete with U Mich and U Wisc., they're kicking your ass right now in most academic depts.
