I have been working at The Open University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people and very friendly colleagues, flexible working hours.

    Cons

Too slow to adapt change and challenges , therefore it is going down hill now

I have been working at The Open University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Very good working environment (great colleagues, good location, pleasant offices)
    - Good development opportunities (courses offered related to procedures, learning new skills, etc.)
    - Employee contribution is recognised
    - Career progression is supported (lot of OU employees work at the uni for decades, working in different roles at different levels)
    - Opportunity for staff to study at the OU
    - Flexible working
    -

    Cons

I honestly cannot think about anything negative in general that I have experienced as OU employee. This view is of course role specific and department/unit specific, I might have different opinion, should I be working elsewhere within the OU.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and continue in providing a great, inclusive workplace for many.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at The Open University part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flexible working including home working
    Good pay
    Friendly staff
    Approachable management

    Cons

    Bureaucracy
Lack of career progression (in academic related posts)
    Top heavy management
Dubious recruitment practices - pretending to be fair and transparent but a bit of a 'who you know' culture

    Advice to Management

reintroduce variety into management roles - yu could have one manager instead of three and as an employee every decision wouldn't have to be cleared through three different people. Also, resource management dept just slows things down - we can be more much efficient if we just go and speak to people rather than having to fill out a request, give a two week turnaround and sending an email to a generic inbox

    Pros

Excellent holiday entitlement, flexible working hours, good local management.

    Cons

I had the best years, and pleased to leave with an enhanced voluntary severance package and pension. Too much pruning of funding has cut science research, student fee increase has cut student numbers. Senior management does not have any idea how to motivate people. The OU has lost it's shine as an employer, and most folk that I used to work with now demoralised and looking for out.

    Advice to Management

Local management remains good, but senior management, fight the cuts and look after your staff.

    Pros

    Flexible working
    Good work-life balance
    Family orientated
    Good pension scheme

    Cons

    Limited progression, Poor annual reviews

    Advice to Management

To value your staff more, to promote internally rather than externally

    Pros

The OU offers great benefits, like flexible working, 6 weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays, free study. The pay is good compared to other companies in Milton Keynes.

    Cons

Support staff grades, have little chance of career advancement, to admi/ management grades despite gaining all relevant degrees etc. There are no career paths in place and appears to have a glass ceiling that support staff are unable to break through, made worse by the current economic climate.

    Advice to Management

There should be clear career paths for support staff, more training grades so they can get the experience they need. Following the prinicpal of growing your own managers, would show great commitment to staff.
