I worked at The Qt Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I must say, Qt has a great following. Customers like us and the quality of the product is good. Employees are very nice to work with. You have tons of latitude with your time and how you do your job.

    Cons

Management is a shambles in the US and overseas. There seems to be no urgency to close business or improve. Management talks a lot about growing but they continually pass the buck when it is time to step up. New hires watch out - no training, no mentoring. Not very fulfilling place to work. US business is run aggressively like a US company, but all R&D and support is done in Scandinavia. They go on vacation for a month in the summer and nothing gets done. Same goes for the holiday season.

    Advice to Management

To grow you need to focus on people and encourage their natural talents. You had some great people leave recently. If the trend continues, your existing business will wither on the vine. Encourage hands-on managers that like to get their hands dirty and have experience. DON'T FORGET TO ON-BOARD AND MENTOR YOUR EMPLOYEES! Your stock price depends on it.

I have been working at The Qt Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Qt is really cool - the most complete cross-platform framework, and the best maintained. I have always enjoyed working with it and was glad for a chance to work on it directly. Fortunately the Digia acquisition may allow us to return to that kind of work, so do not take anything negative I have written as any kind of indication for the future of that; the outlook seems bright for Qt now, just not for Nokia (and I seem to be reviewing Nokia here).

    Cons

Nokia provided a series of mobile platform projects which distracted us from working on Qt itself, and the company's right hand doesn't know what the left is doing so there were destabilizing changes on a couple of occasions, ending with the cancellation of a project after this entire office had wasted more than a year on it.

    Advice to Management

There's no hope for management, they don't have a working vision at all. They need to be replaced, but it may be too late for that too.

I have been working at The Qt Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great group of people and local office had lots of benifits such as lunch provided in canteen

    Cons

a purely engineering company with no associate sales department means a rough time if "sponsored" project being worked does not survive

    Advice to Management

Good quality work gets done if the business basics are sorted ie what to work on and how is it paid for and work required is well communicated to staff. Be carefull before commiting to large project in the latest fad such as Mobile Software Development. Such projects come with a high risk profile and lead times between R&D expense verses sales income can be problematic.

I worked at The Qt Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Fantastic technology and people
    Great industry impact
Good culture (for me at least)

    Cons

    Management is many timezones away
    Not a lot of training
Not a lot of opportunity for advancement (its flat anyway... but your title won't change)
The office location is not fancy / good

    Advice to Management

Needs a little more focus and investment in Santa Clara. Barely at critical mass for a healthy office.
