I worked at The Standard as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Friendly people willing to share their domain expertise, easy to approach

    Cons

Located in downtown. Paid public parking

    Advice to Management

A separate Software company should be created and it should be separated from main stream Insurance business. Recommend setting up an offshore software development division to cater to their needs rather than depending on other consulting companies.

I have been working at The Standard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've been at The Standard for seven years and here are a couple observations:
    1) Going above and beyond is not difficult and it is rewarded, especially if you take it upon yourself to find ways to grow and learn.
    2) At every level, including the Management Committee, people are approachable and honestly interested in helping each other when they can. I've seen some very self-centered managers come and go - but they don't tend to last long.

    Cons

    1) There is a subset of employees who believe the grass is greener, but rather than go see for themselves they just stay and complain.
    2) The Standard is susceptible to focusing on too many priorities, which makes it difficult to move the ball on any priority.

    Advice to Management

The more visible you are, the better. I like running into Greg in the elevator, but it would be even better to run into him (or the other Management Committee members) desk-side.

I have been working at The Standard full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I feel supported by management, encouraged to learn and grow, and get frequent feedback; there's a free on-site gym (for $25 per month you can do yoga, pilates, zumba and strength training classes during lunch time or later in the day), the culture is great, people are intelligent and educated, there are tons of employee groups and opportunities to volunteer, motorized sit/stand desks at all new work stations, laptops with ability to plug in and share easily in meeting rooms, mentorship program, good 401(k) match

    Cons

Paying for parking downtown stinks, but that's not the company's fault. They are moving to a high-deductible plan only option in 2018.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe discourage your management from working so many hours. It sets a precedent and will increase burn out.

I have been working at The Standard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can always find someone who knows something about what you need, or knows someone who does, and you can do it very quickly. There is also a lot of room for growth.

    Cons

It's a conservative company that has been slow on the technology side. I started in 2014 and there was still microfiche and typewriters in use.

I worked at The Standard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I left The Standard to stay at home with my children and when I decide to return to the workforce it will be the first place I look. The Standard cared about my professional development and engagement as well as work-life balance. From formal leadership development programs to book clubs there were multiple avenues for me to hone my professional skills. At the same time, I never felt the need or pressure to work long days and sacrifice time with family to be considered for development or advancement opportunities.
The work environment was also positive, encouraging, and collaborative at all levels within the organization. Health, dental, life, and disability coverage are on par with other companies and their 401k is program is a great value.
The leadership understands the importance of long-term growth and profitability. They think beyond the next 12-24 months and avoid making decisions that have only short-term gains or carry significant risk.

    Cons

Like any responsible company, they have to manage expenses to ensure they are profitable. As such technology investments are judiciously focused on must haves such as security, regulatory requirements, reducing costs and new product development. As an employee not many of these investments are directly felt.

    Advice to Management

Prospective managers/leaders need to be patient, collaborative, communicative, and encouraging as well as able to support people, process, and technology. Current management needs to continue listening and increasing transparency.

I have been working at The Standard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you're working hard everyday, then you get more autonomy. Some of the people that complain are usually the ones with poor audit scores, or just don't know how to do their job effectively. They give more opportunities to people that work hard such as various projects, approving for new team members or teaching classes to new hires. The benefits are solid as well.

    Cons

Needs more open communication across the department. A lot of team members hear about updates and department changes last minute.
