I worked at The United Illuminating Company full-time

    Pros

Some of the best people around. Benefits are top notch.

    Cons

Very low pay outside of being a lineman and a rapidly aging workforce resistant to change. No room for advancement until you "put in your time". Recently acquired by Iberdrola who has cut bonuses and employee appreciation events.

    Advice to Management

Give people a reason to stay.

I have been working at The United Illuminating Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you're looking for a work-life balance - this is your place. You are paid for the time you work and very rarely have to work more than your 8 hour day.
They also offer decent benefits. They also offer "floating holidays" so you basically get three extra days of time off to take as you please. The compensation is also remarkably fair.

    Cons

Unless you are a part of what I like to call "the good ol' boys club" climbing the corporate ladder is essentially impossible - regardless of how hard you work. Preference is given to those who are friends outside of work with current managers. Often, the idea that providing opportunities to younger employees and training them is shadowed by the jealousy or impotence of those in positions of power. Promotions are generally based solely on your time in the industry rather than your competency and performance. It takes FOREVER to earn additional vacation time.

I have been working at The United Illuminating Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smaller company where everyone is very friendly

    Cons

Personally I don't like CT but if you're into suburban life, it's great! Also the rotational position needs some tuning

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, good Coworkers, challenging environment...never dull.

    Cons

micro management by direct supervisors and upper management, policies unevenly applied to work force, favoritism, fear of disciplinary action around every turn for minor offenses.

    Advice to Management

Stop micro managing workforce and do more to lift morale and show employee appreciation.

    Pros

Nice people, good benefits which include a 401k match and an array of health plans to choose from.

    Cons

Management is not flexible, no option to work flex time or telecommute even on occasion. Management doesn't believe in change and doesn't empower employees. They are more concerned about one sitting at their desk versus actual contribution.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees and let people bring best practices to the table versus doing things just to do them.

    Pros

    Cons

Utility company, one may not find the work interesting and dynamic. Salary and increments may not be encouraging.
