I have been working at The University of Kansas Health System full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nationally recognized health care provider, hospital is generous to employees (great pay & benefits) and true open door policy. Genuinely supports and cares about staff.

    Cons

As anywhere, pockets of dysfunctional managers & departments can and do cause discontent & dissatisfaction. Too bad but to be expected

    Advice to Management

Partner with HR more strategically; mentor/train new managers; monitor and act on areas with high turnover (currently monitored but no action taken).

I have been working at The University of Kansas Health System full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

CEO has a good vision. Most management seems genuinely kind. IT often works from home 1+ day a week. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

My department allowed no working from home. Management was often petty about hours and breaks and PTO. I parked on the street and hoofed it in. Multiple managers (>3) that all often wanted updates on work or who would assign me new work.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within. Don't be suspicious of employees. If you're interviewing internally, why ask behavioral questions? You know if the employee is right for the job!

I have been working at The University of Kansas Health System part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Management is great, willing to work with your schedule. There are many different specialty ICU units at the hospital. They use smartshift system for overtime and pay is very competitive.

    Cons

Parking!! You have to park blocks away from the hospital and it is always a hassle to find a spot if you are running late or working a later shift.

I have been working at The University of Kansas Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They treat us really well and allow us to participate in ideas that help workflow.

    Cons

Brainstorming doesn't always allow for staffing vs. needs of the patient. Like everywhere, we sometimes work with less than we should.

    Advice to Management

Pay the extra for staffing correctly. A fall typically costs the hospital another 6 days in the hospital for that patient at an average of $14,000 in unnecessary money. It really is cheaper and safer to staff correctly even if sometimes you were overstaffed overstaffed. The company that does it right the first time, gets the great reputation and saves money overall.
