I worked at The University of Texas-Pan American part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Like most universities, Pan Am has a lot of employment opportunities for students. As an engineering undergraduate and graduate student both, there was a plethora of research opportunities for buffing up a resume and easing financial burdens.

    Cons

Like with most student research positions, they were almost exclusively part-time and often called for full-time dedication to the research or project. If the research did not provide successful results, grant funding is pulled, the project cancelled and the students staff unemployed come next semester.

    Advice to Management

Continue providing excellent opportunities for paid student research. The opportunities were all there when I was a student and only required that I pursue them.

I worked at The University of Texas-Pan American full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and hours (depending on your title). You never have to worry about snow days at this location due to good weather; as long as there are no hurricanes in the path of the school.

    Cons

It was apparent that in every department including mine favoritism was used to promote or suggest employees for new positions. Due to this there were cases when unqualified individuals were hired or promoted. You literally have to"know somebody" to get ahead or even in the door.

    Advice to Management

Stop favoritism in the workplace. This will help the school in the long run and foster love of the school.

I worked at The University of Texas-Pan American full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UTPA was a convenient place to work since I was taking classes, it was also close to my home, and I had easy relations with my superiors.

    Cons

Most problems were with communications between other departments and assuring that enough supplies were ordered and delivered by the time they were needed.

    Advice to Management

There should be faster, efficient communication to other offices so that paperwork and credentials can be dispersed more effectively.
