    Cons

Not any cons from my time being there except that I wished I could work longer as I was only working as a freelancer

I have been working at The Vegan Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Working within a sector that you are passionate about. It's great meeting like minded people and companies. - Career development is possible but you have to really push for it. - Employee of the quarter is good fun. - The recent pay review has ensured everyone is at an industry standard salary.

    Cons

There has been a lot of change within a short amount of time and a high turnover staff which can feel unsettling.

I worked at The Vegan Society full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The Vegan Society is hands down the best place I've worked at and I look back at my time there very affectionately. The job itself is of course what drew me to the organisation the most, particularly because in my role as Media Officer I had a unique opportunity to be a powerful voice for the animals in the media. Anyone passionate about veganism and issues surrounding it will find it a rewarding place to work. Staff are lovely, pay is very generous for the charity sector and there's some flexibility around working hours which is great if you are (or aren't!) a morning person. The organisation is very valuable for the vegan community because of its campaigns, legal and nutrition work, and I was very lucky to be able to promote this. I also gained very valuable professional experience and skills thanks to the training I had been getting.

    Cons

    Honestly, nothing worth pointing out!

I have been working at The Vegan Society full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I find being at The Vegan Society a very rewarding place to work. Work is varied and interesting with lots of room for personal development. Management structure is quite flat and I genuinely feel part of a team where I'm listened to and empowered to make changes. Staff are friendly and welcoming - especially after having an accident outside of work on my third day ! I don't think I've been in a working environment before where the staff are incredibly dedicated and hard working, but also stress free at the same time. Being in a workplace with like minded people is very rewarding. Pay is now better than previously after having had a recent pay review, and the office is in a great location in Birmingham

    Cons

    None at the moment !

I worked at The Vegan Society full-time

    Pros

Working at TVS was very flexible in terms of hours works, and the organisation was very supporting when I needed to be off long-term sick, and extremely helpful in getting me back into work. I received excellent support in training - fully paid for and 1/day a week study leave to complete my qualification. I really enjoyed my time at The Vegan Society and particularly felt that the staff were wonderful to be around, and I have some excellent friends from my time there.

    Cons

The salary levels are lower than would be expected from this type of work - even when benchmarked against other similar size charities. It can take a long time for changes to be made which can be frustrating - but usually management is prepared to listen and take on board suggestions, even if they can't be done. The high-level governance and management is complex - the organisation is a membership society, trustees are elected from the membership (rather than selected and appointed on a skills basis) and members have an active vote in what the organisation does which means that staff voice is not as vocal as either trustees or members.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at The Vegan Society full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working at TVS was a dream role and my first in the Charity sector. The people who work at TVS are all working to achieve the same mission and targets and this was recognised through our strategy and objectives. Senior Management were mainly positive throughout my time there and they proved to drive the charity forward to exceed my expectations and transform themselves into a modern workplace. Staff were always friendly and the work atmosphere was enjoyable.

    Cons

High staff turnover was an issue during my time at TVS from 2012 - 2016, and it could prove difficult to forge relationships and really drive the charity towards its targets when some staff could become burnt out easily. This was minimised by the time I moved on with staff enjoying longer periods and benefits that allowed them to work positively in a supportive environment.

I worked at The Vegan Society

    Pros

Being with compassionate people working hard to be a positive influence in the world. Sharing ideas and connecting with people at events across the UK and overseas. Being in work that fits well with personal values.

    Cons

Increased risk of compassion fatigue and burnout from wanting to give as much as possible to the role, and added stresses of dealing with high turnover of staff experiencing those/other issues. Frustrations if feeling employees' dedication and work ethic were being questioned instead of their legitimate concerns (e.g. about understaffing and workload) being acknowledged and support offered.

I worked at The Vegan Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

All vegan colleagues Varied work / travel to trade shows etc TOIL if you work over your 37.5 hours 20-22 days holiday Bank Holidays off Samples of vegan food to try/ take home.

    Cons

No room for personal development on any level, like working in a factory. Completely lack of leadership all round. Shocking amount of disaplinaries for the pettiest things,an exampleof this would be going to a Dr's appointment for an hour and being back slightly late. Plans change every 5 minutes- which is frustrating. No chance of ever being promoted or your work being recognised as it doesn't actually get put out in the public domain. No trust towards any of the staff, even those who resign are made to feel like they are 'could-be criminals' and may steal companies data from their PC. A complete disregard for the work/life balance, and life events that come out of the blue, such as a pet being ill or a child, or even the death of a parent. For a 'compassionate' organisation, there is no compassion.
