I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work-life balance, good benefits scheme, lots of opportunities to volunteer with charities and to help the local community.

    Cons

Very little real opportunity to advance, most positions are underpaid, things are slowly becoming more corporate with targets and employee monitoring.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on employee happiness and motivation and better training than schemes and gimmicks.

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

good people and facilities. Always willing to show you something new.

    Cons

Advertised as higher wages, when offered the job it was for a completely different salary. Wherever you are based you are just doing basic data entry. Training is appalling or non existent. Lots of nepotism so no chance of promotion unless you are liked by senior managers

    Advice to Management

Pay more, forget the worthless bonus scheme and just pay your staff decent wages. Promote people for what they can do rather than who can suck up the most and then expect hard workers to train them.

I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are many ambitious intelligent people on all levels in the company wanting to succeed. Company promotes win-win ideas and continuous improvement. Company is big and strong. There is a huge potential for networking.

    Cons

Red tape (due to size of the company) and fast aquisitions (diversity of different parts of the company) make process standardisation and positive changes quite challenging to achieve. Long hours.

    Advice to Management

Continue on the path to unite different divisions, departments, people.

I worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good team atmosphere, with permanent and temporary workers all included. Sharing ideas is encouraged. Lots of humour, some really fun personalities. Most vacancies are circulated internally first. Much more focus on solving issues than blaming individuals. A free weekly "happy bus" into Loughborough.

    Cons

Policy says temps must be let go after ten months. Little long term opportunity for anyone outside the science/ lab background. Archaic systems in places, some of the work is very dull. Some "cubicle mentality". Many employees say "obviously" about twelve times an hour. Until Christmas 2012 everyone has to eat lunch in a tent (canteen space being used for a special project).

    Advice to Management

Consider whether retaining trained experienced temps for longer is worthwhile. Senior management could be a bit more accessible.
