I have been working at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great lower level co-workers.

    Cons

First, there are VERY PHYSICALLY demanding jobs classified as administration jobs. I believe this is to keep the salary lower. I’m pretty sure it is or should be illegal. Driving a forklift is not administration.

The Lab is horrible at sharing information. The management omits information until the last minute, if they share at all. There is NO opportunity for progression or promotion. NO real salary increases. Everyone that works here has been here for years or decades(no exaggeration) and are content which doesn’t prompt leadership for change. Your day to work does not match your job description and sometimes not even your job title. If you’re not a scientist your voice isn’t heard. No budget means old equipment is being used for certain departments.

THE SALARY DOES NOT MATCH THE WORK EXPECTATIONS. It is almost 10k BELOW the national average.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN to your employees. Lower entry level job requirements to give more opportunities, this job does not require 5 years experience. Hire younger people, the job is very physical.

    The salary is insulting.

I worked at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Has a nice work environment. Knowledgeable staff and users. Encouraging mentors.

    Cons

Current management makes the lab act more like a business than a research facility. They use to give H1 work visa for postdocs but now they give J1. Its the only reason I left my postdoc there after 2 years.

    Advice to Management

If you want to attract international researchers, you should reconsider your visa sponsorship policies.

I have been working at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility full-time

    Pros

The nuclear physic research is very interesting and rewarding overall. Very academic environment with very unique challenges. Surrounded by highly intelligent people and a great deal of cultural diversity for the lab's location.

    Cons

The lab management style has changed over the last several years, not necessarily for the better. Funding is a major problem which results in no/small pay increases, limited resources to complete work, and constant focus on money instead of quality science/work. Information is not very transparent with regard to how/why decisions are made, specifically when resources are strained. Morale has suffered over the last few years with a layoff, reduction in benefits, and limited opportunities. The lab can be a frustrating place to work when considering the environment; the average age is quite high and folks that able to retire do not which leads to resistance of new ideas and change...the fundamentals behind good science.

    Advice to Management

Lab management is transitioning; the new team needs to establish a strong vision for the lab's future and commit to addressing the underlying issues to realize that vision. Brilliant scientific staff are rarely excellent managers or leaders by nature; putting such in charge are holding the lab back from realizing efficiency, capitalizing on team work, and strong management. The lab is a good place to learn and gain experience in the short term, but ambitious employees grow frustrated with the tolerance for status-quo and laissez-faire management. Young, bright employees will not see JLab as a long term career if this style continues.

    Pros

Good starting pay. Flexible work and vacation schedule. High starting pay. Dynamic work environment in which you do something new reasonably often and are always learning.

    Cons

Once you are hired, promotions are very difficult to obtain and pay increases are meager no matter how hard an individual may work.
    Micromanagement is common.

    Advice to Management

In my case, direct supervisors need to be looked at more carefully. Micromanagement killed productivity and overall well being of an individual employees motivation.

I have been working at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits beat all but the top tech and financial companies. Salaries are slightly lower than average for tech professionals, but the benefits can actually put some of that back in your wallet. Excellent work environment, smart people, noble mission. Layoffs are rare.

Academic focus means that if you want to get an advanced degree while also working, the fit here is nearly ideal.

    Cons

Lab budget is at the mercy of politicians in Congress and the President. Luckily, the President's cabinet has included a PhD scientist as head of the DOE for some time, and consortiums of scientists advise the government on funding. However, a lack of budget and financial troubles in government have resulted in the first organization-wide layoffs in the history of the lab along with shrinking raises. Training and travel has suffered as a result.

Although there is nothing on the planet to match this world-class particle accelerator, the technology is a mixture of old and new. As a tech worker, you may struggle to keep your skills up to date unless you take advantage of outside training and research.

    Advice to Management

First and foremost, don't mess with a working formula. JLab is a dream job.

Keep reminding the public and the politicians of the importance of the work we do.

Jefferson Lab was provided a excellent work environment. They constantly strive to educate all of the work force and provide a very positive atmosphere.

    Cons

The pay is not comparable to private industry unless you have a degree and spend a considerable amount of time here. However they will work with you to go to school.
