I worked at Thompson & Knight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I was a staffer, not an attorney. I enjoyed most of my colleagues and some of the attorneys, when they spoke to me. The offices are impressive, and the pay and benefits were fair. The history and legacy of the firm made me proud to accept the job. The firm had decent operations and leadership in place during my tenure.

    Cons

Young attorneys treat staffers like chattel, not as equals who can help their success. There must be a lot of pressure on them because they treat secretaries and paralegals horribly. Partners were much kinder. They would treat us with respect, like actual people.
While I was there, there was a definite old boys club. BUT the old boys had manners. That could just be a generational thing, but they were gracious even though they earned 10 times what I did.

    Advice to Management

    Try to build teams.

I have been working at Thompson & Knight full-time

    Pros

well-defined training and mentoring programs for associates, paralegals and other law firm professionals; extensive administrative and support staff at its disposal. high-caliber talent and a broad range of resources.

    Cons

Due to selective hiring processes and above-market earnings, lawyers, paralegals and other professionals in a large law firm are held to a high standard of competence.

    Pros

Well respected and established law firm. Very structured in terms of positions and responsibilities. Global offices and opportunities to work with different cohorts globally. Very supportive management. Great benefits.

    Cons

The Los Angeles office is fairly new and still striving to establish itself in the competitive field of entertainment law and management in Hollywood. Beautiful office space in Century City.

    Advice to Management

Management seems to be great. No complaints here especially since there is an open line of communication even with the headquarters in Dallas.

I worked at Thompson & Knight (More than a year)

    Pros

None. Thompson & Knight is a company I would not recommend to even my own, worst enemy. This is a company I would run away from, fast!

    Cons

COO was terrible to work with where she would not open to input on opportunities. She was unprofessional and would ridicule and chastise employees in front of large groups. Accepting this position was the worst decision of my career.

Benefits are priced in tiers, so the more you make the more you pay in benefits. So if you were close to the top of one tier and got a raise, you could actually net less because suddenly you have to pay a lot more in benefits compared to a modest raise.

I worked at Thompson & Knight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The starting salaries for associate attorneys right out of law school is competitive.

    Cons

This is a Good Old Boys company. Getting a promotion is 20% based on work ethics, and 80% based on "who you know."

    Advice to Management

Promote competent employees and stray away from favoritism. There are far too many incompetent supervisors in this company.

    Pros

Some nice people. It's a job.

    Cons

Low salaries and uneven work loads among the secretaries. Backstabbing among attorneys. Poor training.

    Advice to Management

Get a new HR department. They ignore problems. Staff has nobody to turn to. Very frustrating.

    Pros

Office Administrator, Barbara, is a fantastic mentor and easy person to work with. The overall atmosphere of the office and the staff to work with is a pleasure.

    Cons

I really don't have anything negative to say about this place.
