Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Best Place to Work!

    Pros

I've loved working at Thumbtack. There is lots of opportunity for growth both professionally and personally. I've learned so many valuable skills and have been challenged in many ways and have grown from it. There are great benefits and it's a great stepping stone for other opportunities. Catered lunches, lots of PTO and great pay.

    Cons

    No 401k matching yet.

    Started promising, but a disappointment.

    Pros

Benefits were great! My teammates were the gold standard for sourcing. They are intelligent, proactive, and creative. The locations were great and they made sure to spoil us.

    Cons

Brought into the company with nothing but promises of growth only to experience back stab after back stab. The company blamed the sourcing team (not recruiting) for every woe and pain they could. The team took on each challenge and exceeded expectations every time, only to be scapegoats for another issue they have no connection to. I have never worked at a company that has answered exceptional performance with threats to our job security. The talent org overall created an ever present cloud of negativity looming over possibly the best team I ever word with.

We're sorry to hear about your individual experience of Thumbtack, though we're happy to hear you found the team to be the best you've ever worked with. Saying goodbye to 250 team members was an incredibly difficult decision and one that happened because of the effects of COVID-19 on our business. This doesn't make it any easier. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you provided to Thumbtack and wish you the very best in all you do.

The outside is appealing, that's how they get you

Nov 9, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Draper, UT

    Pros

Free food. Decent working hours. Specific teams aren't bad. The benefits are great.

    Cons

Faking it completely. The CEO came to Salt Lake to deliver news and decided to plant people in the audience to say kind things about the updates to shape the narrative. If that isn't shady, I don't know what is. The politicking is insane. The "culture" isn't diverse. Hiring the same type of people doesn't get you new ideas or thinking outside of the box. Getting actually diversity in people instead of who they voted for would do you good. It's a fancy call center for lazy hipsters. The CEO and leadership think they are bigger than they are and walk around with their noses in the air. They company is still growing and it's a good time to be humble. There wasn't an HR until the last year or so. Lots of issues brewing that aren't being solved. People get promoted to leadership because of who they know, not because of their work ethic. Overpaid management and underpaid staff. Management who used to be in HR actually sexually harassed employees without any repercussions even with ALL of senior leadership knowing about it. Firing managers, senior leaderships, and VPs is seen as a weakness so they will keep people around who are clearly unqualified just to save face. Being a "cool place to work" invites inappropriate behavior that is brushed off as being "fun" or "hip" yet they push unbias training down everyones throat and make it mandatory that you show up. It's not helpful and all it does is push people who were already afraid of speaking up further into their corners.

    Cons

-Very Cliquey; Employees are either long-timers or brand new. It's very hard to shake the "newbie" title even after being there a while. -Company doesn't seem able to execute on its business model. -Leadership talks a lot but actions speak louder than words.

Thumbtack used to be a great place to work in customer support. Now? Avoid at all costs.

    Pros

Thumbtack had a unique culture with a startup mentality where people come first. At one time, CS agents had the autonomy to "do the right thing," and go out of their way to make sure we were giving the best assistance possible. Our role was to help the users of our site succeed and understand how to make the most of the product.

    Cons

There was a drastic decline in culture and the embodiment of company values in Customer Support when the new CS director took over in 2019. It became like any other soul-crushing call center job. We were consistently understaffed, which was intentional to save money, but extremely stressful and draining to CS agents. The call volume was relentless, and we were encouraged to be less helpful so that calls would be shorter. Our users seemed to be increasingly losing faith in us, as customer support is the face of Thumbtack. The attendance policy was changed to require everyone to work despite previously planned vacation, etc. if an especially busy day was forecasted. We lost all the great perks and benefits that set Thumbtack apart from other companies.

    Amazing Culture

    Pros

I've worked in high pressure and aggressive companies in the past, and after my first week at Thumbtack, my shoulders started to relax, my head lifted, and I could smile again. Employees are truly happy, kind, and great to work with. The in-house culinary team is absolutely incredible. Friends from other companies frequently ask to "stop-by and have lunch." Executives truly care about building a thoughtful product.

    Cons

While the benefits are great (health insurance with no monthly premium, phone reimbursement, and delicious food) they could look to match other companies with perks like a fitness reimbursement, fertility benefits, and 401K match. Not deal breakers for the great work experience in my book, but I do miss those benefits a bit.

    Pros

A good work environment that supports a work/life balance. Management is supportive and always encouraging and helping you grow at the company. They have great benefits and leave you with the feeling that they really care about their employees.

    Cons

Lots of growing pains. The company is growing fast so be ready to always be ready to adjust.
