I have been working at Tidewater Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

After many years at TCC, I still love the sense of community offered by the faculty. We have great academic freedom, strong technology support, flexible hours, and leadership that cares.

    Cons

Leadership is struggling to contain the enrollment decline, now in it's fourth year. A lack of vision is apparent in leadership, and morale has taken a hit as pay increases were cancelled. The budget future does not look bright for Virginia's public colleges.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the rank & file.

I have been working at Tidewater Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great college, and the students are always fun to interact with.

    Cons

Management, across the board puts their friends/family into positions of power, and they just further contribute to the overall poor customer service offered by this college.

Management will do any, and everything to keep you under their thumb, take credit for your work, and see that you do not advance.

If you want a job where you are stuck in the same position for years, with little recognition for your handwork and fresh ideas, this is the place.

I worked at Tidewater Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Contributed to student success. Flexible schedule. Easy going atmosphere.

    Cons

Very little job mobility within the organization. Pay raise is not based on merit but based on the state government.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a way to train the people that you have and bring them on board full time. They will be more successful and contribute more.

    Pros

This college offers great flexibility. very family oriented and the faculty and staff are easy to work with.

    Cons

Because the college is a state college, regulated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the potential for salary increases are minimal to none. The salary is fine if you are being hired from the outside. However, because of state law that governs raises, current employees on receive 0-15% increase in salary when applying/transferring to another position, regardless of the job description. II cam in at a low salary, but when I interviewed internally and was offered a position of a higher caliber, I could only get a 10% increase (10% of my salary), even though the market salary was near $50,000. this goes for ANY and EVERY POSITION, once you are in.

    Advice to Management

It would be helpful if management would fight for higher salaries for good employees. But, I understand that they really can't do anything because it is regulated by the State of VA and the state has set the policy.
