I have been working at Tidewater Community College part-time

    Pros

Hours are always available, a lot of office skills are learned and implemented. A great place/title to get a start in a business or office oriented career.

    Cons

In order to advance, a job has to be posted publicly in order to apply. TCC tends to go with outside hires or previously laid off TCC employees before looking at inside (qualified) hires.

Does not pay enough for what is expected of someone in this position. The administrative staff is by and large responsible for ensuring the success of day to day operations and keeping upper management afloat.

    Advice to Management

Upper management could benefit others by being more apt to recognize the hard work admin. assistants do in one day for everyone. Listening to administrative staff in regards to improvements would also prove beneficial.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Tidewater Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very flexible with schedule for working students. Supportive immediate supervisors and wonderful departmental faculty. Great place to work if you really want to make a difference in people's lives.

    Cons

Awful pay, no benefits, extremely limited advancement opportunities leads to very high turnover. Management seems unusually focused on shifting to online classes and creating degree programs that don't require the purchasing of any textbooks.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on helping enrolled students be successful and complete their courses/degrees than on trying to boost enrollment by going after people who need a year's worth of developmental courses before they'll ever earn a single credit hoping they'll stick around.

    - Incredibly bureaucratic upper-administration, constant fighting and bickering between Norfolk and VA Beach campus like children
    - Very slow to adapt, management decisions take ages

    Pros

Time off, great benefits, and flexible schedule. Great co-worker s, great Norfolk location, free parking. State retirement plan a plus

    Cons

Horrible pay, you can't support a family on this pay. Single mom still needs state assistance to survive working here and the raises are horrible and not merit based

    Advice to Management

Quality workers will be retained if pay was higher or given on experience and degree.

I have been working at Tidewater Community College part-time

    Pros

Have been able to meet some really great people and have been fortunate enough to learn a lot outside of my degree.

    Cons

No opportunity for advancement, unless you know someone who knows someone.

    Advice to Management

Focusing on cutting budgets is cutting moral. This then turns into a never-ending cycle because you're employees feel underappreciated and don't give their best which shows to the students who get frustrated with the frustrated staff.

I have been working at Tidewater Community College full-time

    Pros

was stable employment for full-time staff (lay-offs this year); knowledge that one is contributing to the surrounding communities; excellent benefits

    Cons

nepotism is alive and well here; poor communication between leaders/managers and staff; general public and students have current information before employees; many managers lack knowledge in higher education and are not the most effective leaders; there is drama between leaders & staff are used as pawns

    Advice to Management

Prior to the execution of policy changes, it is important for management to understand the actual implications of the new policies and their effects (positive or negative). Human Resources should do a better job of educating managers on basic HR policies.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Tidewater Community College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good state benefits after 5 years vested service

    Cons

Favoritism at it's best. Racist at it's worst.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving your friends jobs they are not qualified to do and stop denying promotions to those who truly earn them.
