I have been working at Tony Chi full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's true that this place isn't for everyone, but for those who truly care about artistry, design and a commitment to a quality, hands-on approach and excellence, there really isn't a better place. It's a pleasure to see the creativity flow when Tony works with his partners, like the wonderful Bill Paley. I get the feeling like nothing is unachievable or unattainable, whether a residence or big box brand. Lots to learn...

    Cons

Lackluster leadership and project management skills from middle management and some seniors who have difficulty inspiring and nurturing young talent and staff.

    Advice to Management

Streamline the workflow process. Cut out excess and inefficiancy.

I worked at Tony Chi full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice kitchen, great portfolio of hospitality clients

    Cons

The principals get into shouting matches with some employees. Seems so immature.

    Advice to Management

It's a tough business but there is no need to treat people that way.

I worked at Tony Chi full-time for more than a year

    Pros

If you are a masochist, it’s the perfect environment.

    Cons

Tonychi is going out of business. They are in the process of fabricating reasons to fire their most loyal staff in order to avoid paying unemployment. They fabricate a ‘culture’ and ‘ideals’ which are written in the firms ‘beliefs’ that are a complete joke. It’s the exact opposite of how anyone really behaves here. Everyone at the highest level there, including the owners and admin have made it their job to berate...

I worked at Tony Chi full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Location of the office. Colleagues from diverse backgrounds to bond over the misery of being in a toxic work environment.

    Cons

There are designers who inspire, designers who are professional and then there’s Tony Chi. For a “designer” of his status he is the one person who will make you want to quit being a designer for life. As the head of a design firm he feels better about himself only when he is putting others down. His choice of words and the sheer volume with which he chooses to express himself over any given situation at hand is astounding!...

    Advice to Management

Humanity and professionalism go a long way. Please treat your employees with some respect and not just like cheap labor. Maybe it’s not too late for Tony to learn about humility and to benefit from anger management sessions.

I worked at Tony Chi full-time

    Pros

-High-profile clientele in top city centers around the world -Truly talented and inspiring founder and some seniors, if you are engaging and curious -Fast-paced learning environment, where you get to wear a lot of different hats and design opportunities from guest room to public space, restaurant and architecture to lighting -Great, lofty office space, feels like working in a cozy home or library rather than an office...

    Cons

-You have to be a self-starter and have initiative to survive here, there's no hand holding -Because of the high-design expectations, passion, and environment, it can get heated from time to time (best to not take anything personally) -Not for the faint of heart, need thick skin

    Advice to Management

-More structured management to help achieve project objectives -Freedom and flexibility to allow for the creative process to stew -Better communication

I have been working at Tony Chi full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It is nice to be able to work on some high budget projects. Diversity in my day to day tasks. Good learning experience.

    Cons

Long hours, very arrogant Principal. Sometimes very tense working environment. Not a lot of opportunity to move up, as Senior Designers are locked in and do not let Juniors do much design work. Benefits are terrible. No vacation days until after working there an entire year, and then you receive only 5!!! They purposely try to choose international students so they have no family or social life and cant spend all day and...

I worked at Tony Chi full-time

    Pros

The studio provides great portfolio pieces and looks good on a resume. Other than Tony and one other young senior design staff member climbing the sleepless ladder to success, the employees are nice enough.

    Cons

There is a reason tony chi is known for their aggressiveness & cruelty to employees across the board. The stress of working here will make you want to quit being a designer forever. A normal day includes loud arguing, cussing, and temper tantrums by senior staff. Unless you enjoy being placed in abusive atmospheres, I'd recommend running away as fast as humanly possible. There are so many other good firms in New York...

    Advice to Management

I'd recommend listening to your employees, and trying to provide CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Anger management classes for Tony and a big slice of humble pie might also help.
