I worked at ToolWatch full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This company cares about its employees and responds to input. The nice thing about a smaller company is that your voice can be heard and there's minimal bureaucratic process to deal with. In-house development team is a breath of fresh air in these days of constant outsourcing.

    Cons

Working with a close-knit team can be great but there can be days when the pressure is on and tension runs higher.

  2. "Small company with "family" culture"

    I worked at ToolWatch full-time

    Pros

In my 7 years at ToolWatch I worked with some of the most awesome people and learned a lot. I really enjoyed the diversity of the clientele and working with all level of software users.

    Cons

Like many small companies, keeping up with customer expectations is complicated. With limited development staff, prioritizing work can be painful as they are unable to fix issues important to their customers

    Advice to Management

Customer retention should be a higher priority. Reducing support to existing customers in order to focus on marketing may be a critical mistake

    Pros

Small number of employees for a large office space. Ability to telecommute when weather prevents commuting into office. Accessible office location, right off I-25. Occasionally lunches provided by company. Cake for your birthday.

    Cons

CEO is too conservative and stuck in his ways, preventing company from taking the next big leap. Website hasn't been updated in years and is an indication as to how the company approaches their product development. Missing out on opportunities to innovate and slow development cycle. Sales team suffers from lack of resources and is short on leadership.Family bond between key team members makes for awkward company dynamics.

    Advice to Management

Quit dragging your feet before your competitors take over your market share. Fire under-performing employees and promote or compensate those that do perform. Hire a CEO that will turn company into a major industry player.

I have been working at ToolWatch full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company culture allows for excellent flexibility and employees are primarily self-motivated. The product is strong and the best in its class in the marketplace. Life/work balance is a priority and keeps morale high.

    Cons

Because the company is constantly pushing to be on the cutting edge in the industry, project direction can change quickly. There is pressure to be knowledgeable about all the latest technology trends.

    Advice to Management

Continue to press forward with cutting edge development, even though it can be painful at times.

    Pros

Great product idea! Money was also very good. Work was interesting and challenging at times. Really enjoyed most of the people I got to work with and the technology. Enjoyed the experience I got on the road and delivering training.

    Cons

Leadership, software development methodology and business practices. Treated customers rather poorly, especially from the Professional Services side.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company and quit dealing with people. You suck at it!
