High Growth. Great People. Challenging Opportunities.

      Pros

Top Hat is the definition of a fast paced environment, there is a lot of opportunity for professional growth. Those looking for a challenge are most successful at Top Hat, if you find it fun to work hard and get satisfaction from learning new things every single day - this is the place for you. The people who work at Top Hat are the heart of the organization. Top Hat employees are exceptional and genuinely enjoy each other's company and learn from one another every day. It makes for a great culture and work environment to be a part of. The combination of working for an education technology company that really is changing the face of education and having the ability to see how much your day to day impacts the growth of the company makes for a rewarding job. The exec team is passionate about the high growth and success of the company. Exciting outlook to see what is ahead next for Top Hat (the product, the people and the company). The perks are helpful too - lifestyle account for TTC and/or fitness is a big plus along with free food and drinks.

      Cons

Constant changes and the rate at which the company is growing can be challenging for some. Growing has pains - work load can be heavy, long hours, high expectations and pressure. Not for those who do not take initiative/ work hard.

      Fast growing, fast paced company

      Feb 4, 2016 -

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Top Hat offers competitive salaries and bonus structures (along with many other perks) and fosters a fast paced environment - a perfect opportunity for top talent to contribute to a company whose product and mission actually aim to do good in the world. Being surrounded by intelligent, hard working people every day means that you are expected, and encouraged, to contribute your own best work. High standards don't intimidate employees here, and a relatively flat hierarchy means that you are able to take ownership over an area of the business and are given the room to learn and grow in your own role and department each day. While Top Hat's vibrant culture, free lunches, and socials are draws in their own right, it is the caliber of work that we accomplish that makes staying worthwhile. In true start up fashion, there is never a dull moment - always something new to test, a new initiative to launch, a change in focus just around the corner. It's an exciting place to be.

      Cons

The cons are inherent to start up culture (periodic misalignment between departments, swift changes in strategy with little time for adjustment) and can only be expected in a company with such high growth. As Top Hat matures, though, these issues will begin to remediate themselves - in fact, they already are.

Startups aren't supposed to be this good

Jul 9, 2015 - Account Manager in Toronto, ON

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The account managers, devs, sales team and executives are amazing. Normally at startups with a super young management team you get bad work environments and terrible products. The team at Top Hat consistently does a great job. I learned more in my two months as an account manager at Top Hat than any role ever. The best part is they're all easy to work with.

      Cons

Fast paced work and long hours are not for all.

Great place to work for self-starters and people willing to get their hands dirty and learn a lot in a little time.

      Pros

-There's people on your team who are really smart and know a lot more than you do. There's great mentors in the company that you can learn from. -You manage your own time and your own schedule. As long as you show up to meetings, get what you need to get done, and deliver what you promise - there is a lot of flexibility to work when and where you want to. On top of our regular vacation days, we get 6 "personal days" during the year to top up our vacation or to take off a day whenever we feel like we need one. -The company is very young and so are most of the employees. It is a very fast-paced and high-energy environment, which keeps it fun. There are lots of company sponsored and informal social events (there's something happening pretty much every week) - so the social aspect is pretty great. -The benefits are good for a start-up company. You get your typical medical benefits, but on top of that you get a "lifestyle spending account" that you can spend on pretty much anything that improves your lifestyle (i.e. public transportation, gym passes, yoga retreats, and the like). -You will always be busy. There is always work to be done, so this is great for someone who likes to take initiative and do more than just what's assigned to them. This company is great for self-starters - you just have to ask and it will be given to you. But if you are someone who likes to just relax on the job and do what you're told, I would say this is not the place for you. -The compensation is very fair. Top Hat pays what the market pays. Upon joining the company, every employee is awarded stock options to share in the long-term growth of the company. My favourite perks at Top Hat include having lunch cooked for me everyday by an in-house chef and an unlimited supply of Perrier and David's Tea.

      Cons

-The company is still very young, and as with all companies that grow very quickly, the standardized processes to get things done are still lacking, so it may take a bit of digging to get done what you need to. But I think that if you're looking to work for a start-up, it is expected that you will be able to deal with ambiguity. -Communication - not everybody's good at communicating, so sometimes you find out things too late and everybody wanted things done yesterday, which leaves a lot of last minute scrambling. The company is currently working on being pre-emptive as opposed to reactive. -There is no formal, standardized performance/compensation review currently in place, which leaves some ambiguity with regards to career progression/compensation.
