I worked at Topco Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Convenient office location, good benefits package. Support from coworkers created irrevocable bond. Marginally lower pay than industry was supplemented with strong benefits package. Was mentored by some very talented and knowledgeable individuals, but many have at least one foot out the door.

    Cons

Left because they expected too much from too few. Hard work ethic is not recognized through pay. Only way to move up is to change departments as openings become available, and most silos have their own process/procedures that do not fully align, limiting growth potential. Most veterans at the top are disappearing and new colleagues are not as focused on the "team-culture" as the old was.

    Advice to Management

Work towards creating a "Topco family" again, it worked! Promote from within and harness the knowledge that can only be gained from working up the ladder and working very closely with member / owners stimulate connections across members / category managers at the bottom. Stimulate and mentor those who are eager to grow with the company, and dump those who are dragging you down. Get rid of Topnotch and encourage/enable managers to present real bonuses for excellence. Don't allow cost of living awards for mediocrity. You have some excellent top performers - they don't all need to be showcased, just work on keeping them, you know what motivates them.

I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very competitive base salaries; regularly pay out at or near 100% on bonuses; trying to improve culture and reputation

    Cons

Low bonus % relative to comparable positions at other companies; higher benefit costs vs. similar roles at other companies; no vesting in 401k until 2 years of employment have been completed; business model makes it difficult to achieve goals, individudal cooperative members often make it difficult to do what's best for the entire cooperative

    Advice to Management

Work on cost of benefits and a more progressive workplace environment to attract and retain talent long term, especially young talent to sustain the company. Also be more realistic about the time needed to implement processes and strategies and do more thorough preparation; understand what it will truly take to get things right the first time vs. moving forward asap and causing a lot of unnecessary work to fix issues that could have been prevented.

I worked at Topco Associates (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people, decent salary, good work/life balance. Location is good and the building is well maintained. Topco has an excellent QA team and while I no longer work there, I will support their brands.

    Cons

In my last years there, there were a lot of political "battles" and it greatly affected morale and project progress. Many good hard-working people left the company

    Advice to Management

I hope the rough seas settled and that Topco experienced have settled. Value the good hard working people and get rid of those who block change and progress.

    Pros

The indirect sourcing branch is an incredible place to develop and refine your strategic sourcing skill set. Great business model which can be very profitable. Well-respected company name on your resume. Also met a lot of smart, friendly people.

    Cons

The politics and personal connections stuff is so thick in the atmosphere you will basically choke on it. If you work hard and kiss up, you will get promoted. If you just work hard, you will be thanked but your career will go nowhere. Top management is running the show how they want to, which is good for them, but not necessarily for everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Act as leaders and treat all employees equitably.

    Cons

Management prioritize guys for leadership positions. Typical boys club.

    Advice to Management

Look at turnover... There is a reason as to why people are leaving left and right in the indirect division.

I worked at Topco Associates full-time

    Pros

Most of the people that work here are amazing. I made a number of close friends working here. You get exposed to many different suppliers and retailers, a very small number of which are great to work with. The work environment is generally relaxed; hardly anyone is micromanaged.

    Cons

The politics are absolutely vicious. The favoritism is out of control. Senior Managers can and will throw you under the bus whenever they please. If you're not politically aligned, you will never advance in the company.

    Advice to Management

There are a whole host of things (and people) to evaluate and be critical of that extend far beyond what is currently measured by the company's revered "metrics."
