I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Unique and smart business model, solid and stable financial growth, interesting work and exposure to many different aspects of the grocery business, many talented, honest, great people. Lots of opportunity for growth and improvement. Solid benefits, life/work balance, several excellent executives. Well respected and influential company in the grocery business.

    Cons

Lack of knowledge. No innovation. Slow to keep the pace with rapidly changing grocery business. Rush to make radical changes proposed by consultants who did not take time to understand intricate internal and external relationships. Decision to downsize or outsource entire departments before the new system is working properly is hurting the business.
Political and volatile environment. Competing priorities and agendas. Mistrust and poor communication between departments. Blatant favoritism, no consequences for unethical behavior. Promotions based on political alignment, not knowledge and achievement.

    Advice to Management

Use better judgment - trust but verify. Many untruths have been slipping into the newsletters and corporate communication. Promote from within. Support long term employees equally as new talent.

I worked at Topco Associates full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Normal 8 to 5 day, appreciated having the weekends off.

    Cons

Had an uneasy feeling the whole time I was there. Did not feel comfortable and I was singled out as a minority and eventually let go. You can tell this company has favorites, just pay close attention.

    Advice to Management

    Even out the playing fields.

I worked at Topco Associates full-time

    Pros

For the first several years lots of great opportunities and advancement.

    Cons

Managed by one of the most evil micromanager in the industry. Treated like crap the last couple of years. Tried very hard but nothing I did or accomplished made any difference. Moved on to become very successful despite being accused of being completely incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the old guard blood sucking evil VP's that no longer deserve the pay, bonus, and title they haven't honestly earned in yesrs.

    Pros

They have a great work life balance with the workday ending at 5 p.m. I met a number of really creative and talented people.

    Cons

The leadership in the marketing department encourages abusive behavior and singles out minorities, in particular. Learning who the bullies are and how to behave in their presence is key to your success. You are walking a fine line everyday. Keep your ideas to yourself and go along with the status quo.

    Advice to Management

Consider empowering your member/owners with the knowledge to market themselves in this digital age. It's only a matter of time before they will figure out they can easily control their own destiny and profit with the independance.

    Pros

    Nice peers, good work/life balance

    Cons

Management prioritize guys for leadership positions. Typical boys club.

    Advice to Management

Look at turnover... There is a reason as to why people are leaving left and right in the indirect division.

I worked at Topco Associates full-time

    Pros

Most of the people that work here are amazing. I made a number of close friends working here. You get exposed to many different suppliers and retailers, a very small number of which are great to work with. The work environment is generally relaxed; hardly anyone is micromanaged.

    Cons

The politics are absolutely vicious. The favoritism is out of control. Senior Managers can and will throw you under the bus whenever they please. If you're not politically aligned, you will never advance in the company.

    Advice to Management

There are a whole host of things (and people) to evaluate and be critical of that extend far beyond what is currently measured by the company's revered "metrics."

    Cons

    Unusual/unique industry and business model
Many happy associates but also many negative ones

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. As an analyst level employee, I appreciate the strong leadership and united front management presents. I also appreciate the support I get from my superiors.

    Pros

Good pay, decent benefits and the bonus structures are so accessible they might as well be gauranteed!

    Cons

LONG hours for salary positions (10-13 hours). Upper department level management lacks accountability.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. We give you honest feedback every year and have sit down meetings with HR to discuss it but it doesn't change!
