I have been working at Toshiba full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay, Benefits, 401K (6% match), time off , tuition reimbursement, parental leave. There's little else that makes this place worth staying.

    Cons

This review is specifically about Toshiba International Corporation (subsidiary) in Houston, TX, but Glassdoor won't let me select that as an option.

First off, go to Google news and read all the issues they were having with the accounting scandal and then the embarrassment that happened with their nuclear division. Now they're forced to hack off limbs and selling their cash cow to fill the crater that the nuclear business left on their balance sheet in a company that was already posting losses and lying about it. Keep that in mind when you read the rest of this review because the mindset flows from Japan down to your CEO and supervisor.

Upper and middle management are incompetent, and the performance reviews are designed so they can keep their jobs regardless of their performance.

They suffer from the same issue that got Toshiba Japan into financial trouble in the first place. No one wants to tell management bad news because they're afraid and upper management won't delve into the numbers to ask questions because then they can't play dumb when problems comes to light.

The overhead is bloated due to the support groups (legal, finance, accounting) who sometime just flat out don't do their jobs or try to have say outside their authority.
Actually, the place is full of people who flat out don't do their jobs. High performers get burned out from picking up the slack from all of the other lazy employees.

Also be prepared to be micromanaged because what terrible company won't be complete without that aspect.

They have no idea what market research is. They think their products are great and innovative. They're not; just overpriced garbage.

Currently looking for a new job to get out of this god awful sinking titanic of company.

    Advice to Management

They know damn well what they need to do but they'll never listen because things like this don't get read by them.

    Pros

Good bennies, good location, and on the whole, smart people to interact with locally.

    Cons

Having to work with the appalling, vanity driven hierarchy in Japan, and the minions they send over to inflict on you over here.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire people here to advise you there if you are never going to listen to a thing they recommend!

hard working people. Many have been there 20+ years.

    Cons

Upper management lacks direction right now. Japan problems are being felt in US and the pressures are being felt all the way down to the little worker bees.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Toshiba full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a design engineer I was expected to work 40 hour weeks and rarely any more, although it did happen on occasion. While there are other jobs in Houston, especially in the oil industry that will pay a good bit more, this was the right pace and the right atmosphere for me. The people I worked with were great, whether they were engineers, manufacturing supervisors, or CNC operators. I started off with three weeks PTO which increased to four after two years; not as much as one would want but better than the norm for a new graduate.

    Cons

Doesn't pay spectacularly but certainly comfortably and demands the appropriate amount of work for the pay. Benefits don't go above and beyond but are at least on par with industry standards.

    Advice to Management

Listen to more to your engineers and stop bending to the whims of the sales group and customers they go over the top to appease. It makes it difficult to make the engineering and manufacturing processes more efficient.
