I worked at Total Hockey part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent environment with fun coworkers who share an interest in hockey. Rewarding engagement with customers that appreciate the help.

    Cons

Little room for growth and mediocre pay. Commission would be nice, but it's not feasible. A lot of product knowledge is required.

    Advice to Management

Try to incorporate commission or offer more competitive pay. Hockey equipment requires a vast amount of knowledge, and pairing that knowledge with the ability to be a good sales person deserves better compensation.

I worked at Total Hockey part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work environment to learn about sales, customer service, and the way a business works. As well as coworkers that are generally fun to be around.

    Cons

Poor corporate leadership decisions. Often making processes within the store more complicated or less convenient for both employees and customers. Failure to meet demand for certain products for customers.

    Advice to Management

Quit hiring people without any skills in the area of sales, just because they play hockey. It is a business, not a hockey team.

    Pros

The discount is nice. The reps are nice. Customers want your opinion... sometimes. You can sharpen your own skates.

    Cons

People will constantly complain to you about how bad the sharpening's are and how you don't have any product. They are slow to replenish anything from DC's and if your 18 your allowed to sharpen. When these kids are taught to sharpen its like the blind leading the blind. No one there knows what they are doing. As a former employee I still have people reaching out to me to sharpen their skates at any rink.

    Advice to Management

Make some better decisions on who you hire to be store managers. If the customers were happy and are not anymore maybe that's saying something.

I worked at Total Hockey (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great employees and staff, really awesome people at every location. Get to play with hockey stuff, most staff plays hockey so it's really cool to see all the new stuff and get to demo it. if you have good availability you can get promoted fairly quickly.

    Cons

Everything upper management, and corporate. They do 0 to help the stores succeed. They cant order product because they don't pay there bills. Customers get frustrated(rightly so, since theirs no product, no tape, no laces. basic stuff) and they take it out on the part timers or managers. Had a Sheriff show up with a notice to appear in court because they hadn't paid rent at my store for months. Warehouse loses stuff all the time. They cut hours like crazy for part timers, our store could only have 1 part timer on staff a day, they rest of the hours had to be filled with manager hours. managers worked 55-60 hours and only got paid for 40. this went on for months. Lost PTO happens far to often.

    Advice to Management

Maybe things will be better after they fire all of upper management, and corporate. hopefully the company that bought them out will do a better job.

I worked at Total Hockey full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Total Hockey was a fun place to work. The team they employ are passionate about the game, as is the ownership and managerial staff. This was my favorite job, as I enjoyed my time for the better part of five years.

    Cons

First of all, the pay is extremely low for what they expect from their employees – this isn't just store staff. The corporate office creates a lot of work everyday, but the pay absolutely does not meet industry standards. Also, the management is very loose with their money on certain projects (i.e. an exclusive apparel brand that failed many times over, yet was still getting millions of dollars poured into it), which led to company-wide layoffs in February 2016. The company shot up production to try and make back money, but failed miserably. All in all, the people in charge of Total Hockey already saw the best years, as this company is surely on the downhill slide after many failed experiments in the industry.

    Advice to Management

Your high-level management is eating up your money saved for salary. These are figureheads who do not do your day-to-day work. Force them to get more involved with the day-to-day processes, making them earn their pay. Only then will you begin to rise again.

    Pros

TH is a growing, tech-savvy company that truly puts customers first. They aren't afraid to push the envelope in attempts to make the shopping or buying experience better, and if you build a good case for an out of the box improvement, management is typically willing to give it a try. It's a good environment for someone willing to learn and advance themselves. I have certainly learned a lot here! Staff is young (20's-30's), hard working, and easy to work with most of the time.

    Cons

For a hockey company, it could be a more fun place to work (staff games, after hours events, etc). As a smaller company, a small staff is expected to generate a high volume of quality work, and very few kudos are given when goals are met or exceeded. Earned merit bonuses initially offered to me upon hire were eliminated for all staff after my 2nd year of employment and are no longer available.

I have been working at Total Hockey full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some of the most fun guys you will work with. Laid back environment, getting to be around the newest hockey products, sharpening skates.

    Cons

Bad hours, but what can you expect in retail. A lot of being on your feet. Low pay and not much room to grow.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to management would be to do a better job scheduling. It seems everyone always has a problem with their schedy.
