Nice perks, but you soon realize that few are promoted. They ride employees like "rented mules" to reach sales goals.

    Pros

Extensive training Excellent benefits for full-time employees Nice perks like free wine and beer

    Cons

Majority of perks are only for sales staff and management and exclude all others Lack of career advancement as open positions are not advertised Many managers operate from a place of fear as each day's sales numbers are tied to their annual bonus

    An Awful Normal

Mar 12, 2015 - Drone in Dover, DE

    Pros

Free beer or wine depending on your position and level of expertise based on passing certain tests. A possible way of making connections within the beverage world though they try to limit that. Possibility of travel, though slim.

    Cons

The attitude depends on where you are in the degree of discontent. The store I was in was almost cancerous. They will give you a lot of rah-rah and there are many who definitely drank the Kool-Aid. But the pay is terrible compared to retail standards, and downright abusive compared to beverage industry especially taken into account what they expect and what you get in return. The work load is overwhelming, their expectations of their low-paid leaned upon workers is reflected in their difficulty in retaining employees that are worthy of investment. Work and life balance for those in store is non-existent. Of store employees they will expect a kind of availability that owns you. All of this represents a very awful normal, of the kind of company which in its totality and business model is based on cutting the profits out of not only their business partners, but of the very people of which day to day success is dependent upon.

    terrible

    Pros

occasional free lunch and discount on selected wine

    Cons

work you like a dog. management was horrible. they expect you to be at all places, at all times. scheduling was terrible as well. some days, they schedule you for closing which means youre not leaving till 10:30-11 pm. then having to come back the next day for opening shift at 5:30-6 in the morning. oh and god forbid if you're busy doing your job helping a customer or restocking inventory and they call you on the radio for something when they clearly can handle it on their own. like manning the register instead of standing in the front looking pretty. they'll constantly radio you every minute until you show up then give you a whole attitude when you told them you was helping customers out in the aisle.

    Reviews are FAKE

    Jul 11, 2019 - Manager

    Pros

Free wine and learning about free wine

    Cons

The same jobs are consistently available on job websites like this one for reason.....high turnover. Additionally they literally advertise their company in the review section on GD. LOL. I find that utterly ridiculous. Clearly something is wrong in their corporate offices when one sees the same job online every 4 to 6 months. No work life balance or even a care about that.

    Dont expect to grow

Aug 19, 2016 - FETM in Saint Louis, MO

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Educate you on wine beer and spirit's free tastings to sell the product better. Fast peaced always something to do if you have a good work ethic.

    Cons

If you have a family forget holidays and any wekend functions. Don't expect to grow they will put the money in to train some new for higher level positions than invest in employees than have been loyal to the company. This company acts as a struggling bussiness when they are not. Not bonus unless you sell what they want sold.

Great company to work for, if you are passionate, capable and hard working

Aug 19, 2015 - Store Manager in Los Angeles, CA
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Tremendous growth opportunity. -Company is evolving and is entering a very exciting and dynamic phase of expansion. -Wages are above average for retail. -Benefits are more than competitive. -Significantly more full time opportunities are available at entry level positions than most other big box retailers. -Opportunity to learn about craft beer, spirits and wine and be trained by other like-minded beverage enthusiasts. -Free wine and beer for life opportunities for many (but not all) positions. -Tremendous opportunity to learn and grow and get promoted.

    Cons

-Not for the faint of heart. Successful people at all levels must be competent, passionate and hard working. -Not a great fit for those without drive, initiative or a desire to be entrepreneurial. -Have to be willing and able to work long hours at times and make occasional work/life balance trade-offs (despite what other reviews say, this is the exception during holiday season, not the general rule year round...it is retail after all). -1/2 hour lunches are a thing. -Company is evolving and maturing and needs to add even more talented people.

Could be better, but there are worse places to make a living

Aug 1, 2014 - Manager in Charlotte, NC
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Great discounts -Alcohol business tends to attract fun people -Customers are generally happy to be in your store -Fast-paced, uptempo, never a dull moment, always something different going on -Solid product training, great portfolio -Free beer and wine every month once you're certified -Pay seems to be above what most retailers pay

    Cons

-It's still retail and all that comes with it: nights, weekends, holidays. -Forget about any semblance of work/life balance. -Hours are long, breaks are short (only 30 minutes in a 12+ hour day???) -Inconsistent management. One month they say to do it this way, the next month it's the total opposite. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. -Poor communication. Often seems like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Needs to be a consistent message from corporate office through upper management and into the store level. And there is not. -Too many people in management here are more concerned with giving the impression that they do a good job as opposed to actually doing a good job. -Wasteful business practices. We always joke that this company must really hate trees. But they love paperwork. And 3-ring binders. -Somewhat dishonest business model that is basically "bait and switch". Your job is essentially to convince the customers to not buy what they came into purchase (major brands advertised at the lowest prices in town) but instead purchase a higher margin private label product. This may not be a big deal for some with sales backgrounds, but it can seem a bit sleazy and it's easy to feel like a used car salesman at times.

    Pros

Monthly Wine free of charge to stay current in training and personal evaluation of the wines being sold. Team building sessions with the option to travel to sister stores in the same region to meet with other teams in the district.

    Cons

Stressful and long hours with senior management not being available to lead and often left alone for hours with very little structure.

Not a caring company to work for.

Mar 28, 2018 - Wine Associate in Richmond, VA

    Pros

Learned about the business but had to use my own judgement on much of what they try and teach you about it. An okay discount and free wine and beer to take home and try. I was lucky to meet a few really cool people who taught me more about wine and beer than any of the managers and the company itself.

    Cons

The store I worked for at #206 in Richmond, VA had a bad reputation with all the vendors because of passive-aggressive managers. I know that they send out emails complaining about the national distributors. They train you to not care about the national label stuff and want you to treat customers like dummies selling them cheap contract wines that they make big profits from. The managers at my store never followed through on a lot of things to it's employees. No pay raises or very small but want you to forever do more. Lazy workers there as well. Pay for cashiers is terrible. Revolving door and I'm so happy I left too.
