I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Beautiful views from the home office. Lots of friendly, talented people.

    Cons

The CEO is an M&A expert without any idea how to motivate or manage people. He seems to view employees as a necessary evil rather than the source of his great personal fortune. He hires top people from other insurers and won't listen to a word they say. After a few weeks or months, he fires them.

I have been working at Tower Group (New York) full-time

    Pros

Generally, good people, nice office locations.

    Cons

Tower is stuck in the mode of a small company. Managment says that they want to grow, but do not back their words with actions; let alone funding.Share some of the downsides of working at Tower Group (New York).

I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Reasonably calm, competent management other than the CEO. Growing mainly through acquisition in a difficult marketplace.

    Cons

Michael Lee, the founder and CEO, is an experienced and wily M&A guy. As a manager and leader, he's a disaster. He's famous for hiring the industry's top experts to advise him, refusing to listen to them and then firing them, sometimes in just a couple of months. He's incapable of running a coherent meeting, inspiring anyone or even thanking the people who have made him rich.

I have been working at Tower Group (New York) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great working environment. Family friendly. I feel valued and respected. Great pay, great benefits, allowed to work independently. Recommendations for change are heard and considered. I work in a beautiful office with really nice, decent people Politics exist in every organization, and nothing I've seen at Tower is different than other places I've been. At the end of the day, we are all working toward a common goal. After three years here, I am thoroughly convinced I don't ever want to work anywhere else. I think some of he reviews here lack perspective, and maybe lack experience in other organizations that truly are mismanaged.

    Cons

Tower is a growing company. Like any similar scenario, there are growing pains that come along with growth and acquisitions. Politics can have their down side, but it is often in how it is handled that the employee's experience can be positive or negative. Silos exist to a certain extent, but there is active work being done to remove those. Sometimes management shares information at too high a level for individual contributors to understand, but at least they share! They prove that they want every employee to feel part of what is happening at Tower.

I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working at Tower does not have any pros

    Cons

Long hour, abusive management, no recognition for hard work, staff in the Finance Dept must be able to accept and tolerate mental abuse from management in order to keep their jobs as management treats its employees without dignity and respect. Make a mistake and get ready to get verbal lashes and threat to your job security.

I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time

    Pros

Growing company; salary fair; great location

    Cons

Absolutely terrible management in the work comp area, specifically claims; too much in terms of politics as to who gets promoted and who gets shown the door; wasteful spending on unnecessary trips out to the field offices by those who love to travel (I experienced trips made where absolutely nothing got accomplished although personnel stayed several days. These were all to nice locations)

I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time

    Pros

A lot of warm, caring people, especially in the middle and lower ranks. Many of the senior managers are experienced and highly skilled. The company takes some innovative approaches to get ahead in a generally lousy business

    Cons

The CEO constantly hires top talent, ignores their (good) advice and then fires them. He seems to think everyone not in his inner circle is incompetent. He is almost entirely incapable of expressing praise or gratitude to the people who have made him rich.

I worked at Tower Group (New York) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Most holidays and weekends off.

    Cons

This company is all about keeping up appearances and nothing more. Everything from the office locations to the warm reception you receive during your first meetings with management are nothing more than smoke and mirrors that quickly disappear upon your first day of work. Management pulls no punches when it comes to being disrespectful, nasty and vile. They blatently lie to your face and lack any form of compassion to loyal employees that have worked for there for many years. This is not a place that will offer you a future or growth (contrary to what you're told during your initial interviews). Most people quit within a few days or months. The annual raise is less than .01% and salary is not increased based on individual performance. Also, with the rising cost of the subpar health insurance plans offered, you'll never bring home more money the upcoming year than you did the last. Simply put, this is the kind of company that you work for when you can't find employment elsewhere. Hence, why the worst people tend to stay. In terms of business practices, consumers aren't treated much differently from employees. This is not the kind of outfit most people would care to be associated with.
