    Pros

Nothing. They are located in an old, outdated building. They are on their 4th President in 4 years. The owner doesn't care about anyone except the original 20 employees. The current president lives in Texas and does not care about anything but money and his dog. They do not accept new ideas or methods. There is no development or career progression because executives cant even make decisions, they have to follow the lead of the owner who is 67, lives in Kentucky and doesn't pay attention to what goes on everyday.

    Cons

There are some nice people there, but most are either leaving or are stuck there because of their family or because there are no other insurance companies to work for in the area.

    Advice to Management

    Leave!

    Pros

Reasonably interesting technical work, decent pay, good introductory job.

    Cons

Middle management is spineless and lets upper management throw tantrums and mis-micro-manage software teams. Business analysts provide little value and frequently throw development teams 'under the bus.' QA team refuses to share any details on the automation testing done; features are commonly completely untested, or in the rare case, tested twice (QA and developer written tests). Developers are 'resources' who are thrown at problems regardless of their skill sets or experience. Rapid churn on most technical positions. Awful choice of worst-of-breed tools (issue trackers, organizational knowledge, time tracking software all b-a-d). Also, business casual? Ech.

    Advice to Management

Hire good staff, treat them like humans, pay them just a bit more, and stand up for them and the decisions they make.

    Pros

Awesome gym, many fun days with baked goods, good area discounts.

    Cons

The following definitions basically sum up what happens at this company:

CRONYISM: the appointment of friends and associates to positions of authority, without proper regard to their qualifications.

NEPOTISM: favoritism granted to relatives or close friends, without regard to their merit.

    Both end the same…

IN SHORT, it's not WHAT you know but WHO you know.

    Advice to Management

focus on knowledge, ability, education and not who your friends are

    Pros

Large company with fair compensation and benefits. Opportunity to learn various areas within the organization and the insurance industry. Pluses when you are located in a smaller market like Gainesville.

    Cons

Communication within the organization is a significant con. Changes within departmental business plans are not relayed effectively by the management group or individual departments. There is also a ceiling for professional growth within the organization. Many of the C-Level positions have been brought in from the outside, which leaves little room for motivated people to move up to Senior level positions within the company. Along those same lines, professional growth plans are non-existent. If you are driven to grow and prosper, it will have to be outside the company. Bonuses are never communicated and many times subjective by your supervisor. There is also very little communication from the CEO to the company. Future direction has been foggy, the organization remains in their heyday from 15+ years ago. There are several positions that must sign non-compete agreements which makes you feel trapped and unable to leave a potentially bad situation. If you are asked to sign one, have an attorney review and provide guidance on its future impact.

    Advice to Management

Provide more transparency to the organizations. Too many times rumors overtake the employees and productivity decreases. Be more creative and innovative with the products that are being sold. The company feels like it is always playing catch up to other companies that are more competitive with price and coverage. Provide career growth and management development plans for the employees who show promise. Offer additional benefits like tuition reimbursement as an option for employees looking to obtain a bachelors or masters degree. Provide ongoing management training for current managers in the organization to prevent complacency and favoritism.

Nepotism, good ol' boy mentality, unprofessional or disrespectful communication, playing favorites, performance and values expectations are unclear, low salaries, no career path.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your employees as if they are second class, they deserve respect and more than free pizza or free hot dogs. Have a recruiter to select your personnel, managers and supervisors hiring their friends or relatives, specially when they don't have the education or the experience is not good.
