I have been working at Town of Barnstable Recreation Department full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked on the waterfront and worked as a lifeguard and WSI. In this job you are guaranteed 40 hours a week with lots of opportunity to take on extra hours. As you stay longer, you get better days off and work as better beaches. Also, the town sets up recertifications every three years.

    Cons

You get what you get. If you get stuck with a bad schedule its what you have for the whole summer. Be sure you know your schedule before you commit to anything.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Town of Barnstable Recreation Department (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Outside work, where you meet different people every day. Great place to accumulate and maintain skills such as CPR, First Aid, Rescue Breathing and Oxygen Administration.

    Cons

Sometimes you have to sit out on the beach in the rain because one crazy person decides it is the perfect time for a swim. Also, kids two years younger than you that haven't finished High School can be promoted over you because of who their parents are.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites. Keep the supervisors in check so that they don't become raging tyrants.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Town of Barnstable Recreation Department full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The best job you will probably ever have.

    Cons

If the weather is cold and rainy, you still work outside. Get use to Cape Cod cold wet rainy days and you will be fine!

    Advice to Management

Some times it is hard to separate friendship and management.

    Pros

It's fun. Kids can get annoying, but that happens. Overall it is not a bad place to work. Go for it.

    Cons

It can get old. It all comes down to how much you enjoy working with little children. If they annoy you too much then it's unfortunate for you.

    Advice to Management

    I have none.

    Pros

Better than average pay for lifeguarding, generally good co-workers

    Cons

Management takes a while to fire bad employees.

    Advice to Management

Pay increases should be linked to seniority
