I have been working at Toys "R" Us (UK) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable salary for most of the year, staff discount can come in handy building up to Christmas.

    Cons

Senior management unable or unwilling to support store management teams, no advance notice of shifts, leading to terrible work/home balance.

When store hours are slashed, managers are used to fill gaps as their time doesn't go towards budget. No extra pay or time off in lieu for this extra work.

    Advice to Management

By employing regular, long term staff over zero hour workers, you'll find the stores far easier to stay on top of.

Also scheduling (for managers) needs to be done further ahead. 2 days forward with further changes on the day will lead to more managers and supervisors going elsewhere quite quickly.

    Mostly friendly staff.
    Good employee discount.

    Cons

    Poor management.
    Poor logistics.
Minimal breaks meaning you get worked to the bone.
Poor work hours scheduling, lots of last minute calls to cover shifts.

    Pros

they give fantastic development opportunities, to those who thrive on responsibility, sales and service.

    Cons

really do need to be flexible and hard working , especially at Christmas

    Advice to Management

keep your team informed, the more they know the better they can peform.

    Pros

Great colleagues, aesthetically fun environment, relatively flexible (except over the Christmas period)

    Cons

High staff turnover, staff overstretched by company cuts, long-term future is in jeopardy due to rise of Smyths and online shopping, poor management, typical retail job.

    Advice to Management

You are overstretching your staff, it isn't sustainable.

I have been working at Toys "R" Us (UK) (More than a year)

    Pros

    Staff discount, layaways, staff discount

    Cons

Poor management, poor communication, lack of human resource department. If you're friendly with management you're one of the lucky ones who'll get hours if not then don't count on a regular salary

    Advice to Management

Balance the hours fairly between all contracted staff. Actually train the people you hire instead of expecting other already overworked employees to pick up your slack

    Pros

    - 20% discount
    - Some great staff members, amongst the insufferable ones
    - Extra hour available if you want some
    - On site parking

    Cons

    - Extremely poor management, who think they're completely above operational tasks
    - Always suffering from management bickering about one another
    - Condescending and foul attitude by most long-term staff

    Advice to Management

You're not above things. Obviously delegating operational staff is part of your position. However, if these staff are snowed-under, hiding away isn't going to help. It's simply going to put customers off.

I worked at Toys "R" Us (UK) full-time

    Pros

Fun colleagues, including the managers (when they aren't stressed, which they are for all of the build up to Christmas).
Will give you the chance to move departments if you work hard enough.
Flexible on hours if you have children or other priorities.
You do not have to work every weekend as long as you ask.
If you're working more than a 6 hour shift you will get a full hour lunch break.
Fun if you're working part time.

    Cons

You will get crying/ screaming children at least once a day, more so during busy periods. Occasionally you will have to clean up pee.
The biggest contract you can get unless you get promoted is 30 hours, which is very rare anyway. "full time" is considered anything over 18 hours a week.
If you are "full time", a lot of work is "delegated" to you since some of the managers are too lazy to do it themselves. This can include running a section of the store by yourself with little to no help.
You will be running around like a headless chicken because they are always understaffed.
Most of the employees have only worked there for 1-2 years.
Post Christmas you will have bare minimum hours except for school holidays, and leading up to Christmas you will have close to no free time.
You are expected to stay an extra 15 minutes (at least) at the end of your shift unpaid.
They will try to make you work shifts with less than 11 hours between them, which is against the law.

    Advice to Management

Don't promise your hard workers promotions that you cannot give just to keep them around. They will realise that you're lying and leave anyway.
Get out of the office and help your employees when they ask for it.
Offer better contracts. 30 hours is not full time and the fact that you pretend it is is insulting.

    Pros

Enjoyable place to work, learned a lot about good customer service with specific aproach due to childrens environment, good team.

    Cons

No particulars regarding work itself, but personally found Disney music on loop non stop a bit overwhelming :)
