I have been working at Trader Joe's full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pays well. Pleasant day to day interactions. Customers make the day enjoyable. Laid back culture is fun for awhile. Schedules are adequate.

    Cons

Stifling career development. Trained to be a Mate not a manager or leader. Management speaks emptily about thinking outside the box. Too many Joe drones.

    Advice to Management

Change happens, embrace it. Adopting new technology will not dilute the culture you’ve built.

I have been working at Trader Joe's part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, great benefits, and the freedom to work in various areas & sections of the store.

    Cons

Playground pettiness from those who have never had another job outside TJs & believe they know all, corporate surveys that allow the inmates to run the asylum, and how they are becoming more and more like every other grocery store chain, getting away from its neighborhood feel.

    Advice to Management

    Lead.
Do not allow playground bullies to dictate policy of the store for fear of negative surveys.
Stop promoting people just because they've done their time.
Regionals know who the f'k ups are, stop moving FTers around from store to store, kick them to the curb and promote those that truly represent the values of TJs.

    Pros

Fast paced environment. Meet interesting people.

    Cons

Lack of good managers. Lack of training and leadership. Favoritism is a problem.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting kids that have no management skills, people skills or willingness to learn. Store captains are asleep and no one is at the helm. Regionals could do better as well.

I worked at Trader Joe's part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good Pay
    Decent Benefits
    10% discount
Paid time off, even at part time

    Cons

There used to be 4 opportunities a year for raises, now only 2.
Dollar raises were common back then, not any more
They cut benefits. Used to be the best, but now you cant support a family with their benefits
    Long hours
They started hiring more managers from outside, so alot of clueless management in the company now
They used to promote alot within, but not so much anymore
Constant revolving door of managers, since they move around alot

    Advice to Management

Trust your veteran crew. Dont micromanage

I have been working at Trader Joe's part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fairly fun place to work. Customers say it looks like a fun place to work. Not stuck in doing one thing all day long. Great co-workers, customers

    Cons

NO paid holidays, AR (absence reserve) accrued at 3% until 5 yrs then 5% forever. So, after years of service you only get 2 weeks paid time off (vacation, sick, holiday). Used to get 15.4% retirement, based on pay by TJ's now it's 10%. Used to get full benefits at 20 hours now the excuse to raise it to 30 hours is ACA--hogwash, Starbucks and Costco did not do that to their people. Grew so big, bottom line is more important than employees.

    Advice to Management

Employees are your greatest asset. Customers second. Without the fabulous employees you wouldn't have such loyal customers.

    Pros

Great insurance benefits. Good pay. Raise every six months.

    Cons

Horrible managers in the Los Angeles stores. Favoritism runs rampage amongst their drinking buddies an pretty girls.

    Advice to Management

    Horrible managers in Los Angeles.

    Pros

Up beat place to work. Environment is fast paced.

    Cons

Slipping away into a corporate culture. Management does less and crew does more and is expected to continuously do more while management continuously does less.

    Advice to Management

We all have the same employer. We need to live by our core values.

I worked at Trader Joe's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ok Benefits, fun people, always a different day each day. Cool customers to interact with on a day to day basis

    Cons

The manager at my location was always on everyone's case and providing unnecessary pressure. Some days we'd be scheduled to come at ridiculous hours.

    Advice to Management

Learn to respect your workers. Also the pay can be a little higher, but being a grocery store I guess its the same everywhere.
