I worked at TransCanada full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Compensation is good.
Company gives some employees the opportunity to build mega projects throughout North America exposing them to international assignments.
Good processes and a rigid structure, great to learn how things should be done.
Most people are friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

    Too many politics.
Promotions happen for few and they are quick between one and the other.
Performance is measured based on how well are you liked and not by meeting tangible expectations.
Lacks of diversity in Executive Management, considering that the company operates in three countries.

    Advice to Management

Hire local people, promote them to leadership and allow local (non Canadians) international assignment opportunities.

    Pros

Great pay and work-life balance. Lots of time off and excellent 401k program. Easy to save money and enjoy life outside of work.

    Cons

Benefits and total compensation has been on the chopping block since the Columbia acquisition. They dropped an annual bonus for longevity with the company, dropped the pension and are considering dropping the on-call premium for operations personnel in the gas pipeline side. Seems like they are just going to keep cutting.

    Advice to Management

Zero is a great goal but it's not real and never will be. Accidents happen and nothing will change that, no matter how much it is rammed down the employee's throats.
