I worked at Transport for NSW full-time

    Pros

You get paid. Sometimes you get to achieve something good.

    Cons

It is government, so expect a lot of politics and red tape. It is large and often change (good or bad) always comes from the top down. If you have a great idea or want to improve culture and hope it bubbles up to the top and across the organisation, then you're very naive. Everything is very top down driven and most advice to the executive team at the top is via confidential white papers produced by top management companies who have no idea how the people below actually operate. You can figure out the outcome yourself.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Transport for NSW full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Above private sector pay. Zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination and bullying.

    Cons

Staff held back from development opportunities. Managers don’t get told how much budget they have left for staff training. Performance review is a tick in the box exercise. Culture of laying blame and slowing down results with red tape, which results in branches, teams and agencies not sharing information. Slow workplace which is unmotivating. Don’t recommend if you’re ambitious and have a low to medium rank in comparison to the many ranks above you.

I have been working at Transport for NSW full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Leadership from the executive is encouraging change and innovation, diversity and well being and leading by example Great work-life balance Flexible working arrangements are supported Remuneration is reasonably competitive Lots of exciting developments in this sector and lots of enthusiasm within the NSW Government in improving transport infrastructure

    Cons

Still struggling to shake off the big bureaucracy legacy of its huge and long-serving workforce. Organisational change is painstakingly slow and morale-deflating at times Like any government agency, innovation is limited by the Acts of parliament that govern the rules of the organisation and the low risk appetite of some managers Opportunities for growth and development within the cluster (e.g. to move around) limited by poor processes and too much red-tape Recruitment is also too slow Delegations of authority too restrictive

    Pros

The skies the limit, put the effort in and you will achieve your career goals. Professional organization with high standards for deliverables. High standard of professional employees that know their stuff.

    Cons

Red tape and bureaucracy makes it difficult to get things done in a timely fashion. Very large organization with competing agendas between departments.
