    Doesn't Recommend

I have been working at Travelers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good place to retire from

    Cons

Legacy software, ancient/non-standard web dev, lots of VB/cobol, bad really bad coding practices, almost all development is done by terrible offshore (aka copy-paste coding), spend most of time dealing with offshore who can't even google basic programming 101 topics, clueless management, terrible/old dev equipment, lots of manual process, architects who don't code, no strong teams - you're a floater doing something different from one project to another. no opportunity to grow a skill set - management doesn't understand different technical specializations.

If you care one bit about programming/development, stay far away from this company.

    Advice to Management

Outsourcing is a waste of time and money. The math doesn't add up if you had any clue about software development

I have been working at Travelers full-time

    Pros

Good pay, 401k match, pension, generous PTO, frequent training.

    Cons

Most of the Travelers work is now done by "less expensive" Indians. The Indians are not employees of Travelers but are "consultants" who work for Accenture, L&T infotech, and Cognizent. Thousands of these Indian "consultants" now work at Travelers in Hartford and thousands more do work for Travelers but live in India. How can current American employees not worry about being replaced by these "less expensive" Indian consultants?

    Advice to Management

The best managers are the ones that know what they are managing. Problems occur when managers do not understand what they manage. How can a manager accurately rate an employee if he doesn't understand what the employee does or makes no attempt to understand what the employee does? I've witnessed this quite a bit.

I have been working at Travelers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good time off benefits, flexibility to work from home as needed, collaborative culture. Much more pleasant environment than other places I've worked.

    Cons

At times, too process-oriented, and lengthy approval processes.

    Advice to Management

Consider whether the same process/approvals are really required for all situations. Make it easier to get things done.
